Engineering applicants who were accepted, please post ur stats

In order to see what kind of engineering applicants are getting in to Rice, I would greatly appreciate it if anyone who was accepted would post their stats. Thanks.

SAT: 800math/680verbal/770IIC/760biology/750writing
ACT:33
Rank: 1/~300 GPA 4.3
EC's: Marching Band 4 years, section leader 2 years, 1st chair concert band 2 years, state marching band 1 year; cross country/track 4 years; Judicial Club (mock trial) 4 years, Judge for 2 years, club president 1 year; Government club youth legislature 4 years, supreme court justice 1 year;math team; science olympiad 4 years, numerous medals at regional, state competitions, been to nationals 3 times; NHS secretary; other honor societies, etc; and other awards: NMS semifinalist, Boys state, Renssalaer Award (best math and science junior), AMC (math competition) school winner in 10th grade, etc.

Not much engineering oriented EC's for me, i just think they like to see that you like to do stuff.

only one :(

well, from the early decision thread i only know of two other people who were accepted into engineering: boogie and tikitiki. i'm not sure if they posted their stats in that thread, but they probably did so check it out. i think five people applied ED for engineering who have posted on that thread, so three made it in.

For the engineering dept, I think the typical accepted applicant scores are something like this:

SAT
math- 730-800
verbal- 630-730

SAT II
math IIC - 730-800
bio/chem/phys- 700-800
writing - 630-730

Most of my friends were in the top 5% of their class, but by no means are they all valleys and sallys.

Accepted under ED

FULL RIDE TOO!!!! Im so glad my mom works there!

hmm wow thats weird i wonder how i made it in...

SAT: 650 math/ 570 verbal/ 670 Math IC/ 520 Writing / 480 Literature
ACT: 25
Rank: 36 out of 496 GPA: Weighted (6.0) 5.0333 Unwieghted (4.0) 3.5222
EC's: Varsity Tennis 3 years, Science Club/National Honor Society Parliamentarian and Events Coordinator, National Honor Society member, Spanish National Honor Society member.

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Somes elective classes I took: Physics IIC, Chemistry II Calculus BC and other required classes. Full AP/GT Schedule for senior year (7 classes)

i have no idea how you made it in. well, good luck staying afloat in college.

his mom works there of course hes gonna get in

wow, i wouldnt expect someone with those stats to get into virginia tech for engineering if a parent worked there.. thats pretty bad

full ride? you lie

yes full ride, mom works in Fondren library and orders books down below in the basements, so its not like she has connections and its like a benefit for all employees.

... was there something else about you that made them accept you? Because score-wise, in my opinion, doesn't matter as long as it shows competence in math/verbal skills, but with a combined score of 1220?? SAT scores of 480 and 520? You don't have that many ECs either, if that's really all you have.

Sorry if I sound rude, I'm just still amazed that you got in.

okay, I just had to point this out....if you got accepted this year ED....then why does it say in your profile "Rice Class of '08"? hm..........

Haha, maybe because he doesn't know what year he's in? Which is kind of sad.

To icymoon:

yeah its okay, ive done other things, just didnt put them in.

2 years of PROMES (Program for Mastery in Engineering Studies) Summer Camp
1 year of MESET(Mentoring & Enrichment Seminar in Engineering Training) Summer Camp, where you live in dorms for two weeks, where you are exposed to overall college environment such as life, classrooms etc.
I regularly attend QUARKNET seminars at Rice University, my high school (George Bush High School) and other other high schools are are working on building a network of cosmic ray detectors (schitilation detector) on our roofs to measure and record data to send to the physics dept. at Rice and University of Houston to aid them in their research. The Seminars are open to all persons interested in physics, just email John.Wilson@mail.uh.edu for the next date.

http://outreach.phys.uh.edu/quarknet.htm

and as for the scores, theres no excuse, i did what i did, but it was too late to take them again and meet the deadline, so its better then nothing. Scores are not everything, my interviewer herself made mid 1200's.

i can pretty much guarantee that you are going to have a crappy experience. engineering is a hard topic, and if you got into a program that you shouldnt have gotten into because your mom works there....i can confidently say that you will struggle.

This is really terrible guys - you are all judging this person, who may be your future roommate or suitemate or classmate, and you have never even met him. Basically you are judging him on his test scores - and from that are predicting his demise in college.
What a shame.
Hopefully, when you get to college, you will realize that there are brilliant people who aren't the best test takers and dumb people with great scores. Not like a 1220 is even a bad score - it's 200 points above average!
Saying things like "i can pretty much guarantee that you are going to have a crappy experience" or "i can confidently say that you will struggle" are absolutely ridiculous. If you don't go to Rice, and you don't know this student you basically have no idea what you are talking about.
Maybe this student will struggle, i don't know. But I'm not making predictions, he could graduate number one in his class at Rice, how would I know.
What I do know is that the attitudes of people on this board are not really going to fit in well at rice.

My son-in-law graduated Summa Cum Laude with an ECE degree from Rice and got a 1290 on his SAT. IT CAN BE DONE; this guy is brilliant, just not a good test taker.

I think it is really an emotional response because a lot of students who have done much more are rejected from Rice. Though I myself am somewhat confused that he was accepted, I do hope that his study habits are up to the measure of what Rice demands in their students.

Cheers.

The above is a good example of why I do not think it wise to "post stats" and compare "how I got in," etc. It leads to jealousy and envy......I doubt my S could even tell you his "stats"; he is just not into that sort of thing.

jenskate,

I wasn't judging candyman, I simply asked if he had done anything else besides his stated sat scores and ECs because otherwise, I was confused on how he got in. And he answered my question later (thanks candy).

I also did not predict his "demise" or anything, as you can see by my posts above. In addition, I do realize there are brilliant people who aren't good test-takers because many of my friends are like that.

I also never sad 1220 was a bad score, instead, I implied that I was surprised by it since most people I know don't have scores like that. Candyman himself even said that he didn't know how he got in. I do realize there are exceptions, so I asked him more about himself.

So I don't know how you got the idea that "you are all judging this person" because that was definitely NOT my intention.
