barrons: (-: Agree that UW’s campus and engineering program are very good. Sometimes hard to know why there is not a “spark” between a kid and a particular college, no matter how much the parent tries to be a matchmaker. My husband thought the haircut deals were a steal (-: BTW, have you ever visited Iowa’s campus?

Cost of Attendance for engineering at the following:

Minnesota: $27,358
Iowa: $36,649
UIUC: $31,810 (incl $3500/yr Eng.surcharge as compared to other UIUC colleges)
Purdue: $39,492
Michigan: $48,331

We reside in Illinois. My son got into engineering at all of the schools above except MI where he is deferred—MI sends out decisions for deferred in April but that tuition is out of our reach. (Have a second child going to college in two years). Iowa is giving my son merit/scholarship $ to end up cheaper than UIUC.

Sorry can’t type so late…make that UICU in my 11:54 post! Sorry all of you Illini fans.

ZoCal, I assume you did not account for the scholarship from Iowa in your cost of attendance. Either way, if transfering from Civil to Mechanical is not as hard as initially thought, I would stick to UIUC. Otherwise, I recommend Purdue or Minnesota.

University of Iowa Engineering Career Fairs … not very impressive.

Your original thought was correct. UIUC. :-)

Thanks rjkofnovi (-:

Just an FYI to all, my husband confirmed with both Jenny Ehrnthaller and Prof. James Phillips (Prof. & Assoc. Head, Dept of Mech.Science and Engineering) at Illinois that my son who has been accepted as a freshman into civil engineering (his second choice) would be required to have 60hrs of completed coursework (2yrs) and a 3.8GPA to transfer from civil engineering to mech. engineering.

Hi ZacalMom, I have son in the same position this year. Accepted in Computer Engineering at UIUC and also in the U of Iowa Engineering program. We are IL residents. What did your son choose? Is he happy with his choice, the school support, the internship and the prospective job opportunities, and his overall experiences at his university choice? Thank you!
You likely will not get an answer from a 5-year old thread. Consider starting a new one.
