Engineering at UGA

I know, GT is better known for Engineering, but how is UGA's Engineering program? I think it's relatively new, and don't know what kind of reputation it has built so far. Any comments?

UGA has had engineering degrees for sometime now. However, the College of Engineering was founded July 1, 2012. It’s a brand new college within UGA. Next fall, UGA will start offering more PhD and Masters programs as well as undergrad degrees in other engineering areas. Right now, UGA’s specialty is agricultural and biological engineering.

Dr. Sven Oie is heading the search for the new dean. Dr. Oie is a very esteemed dean from the College of Pharmacy(left UCSF in 2000 for UGA). Dr. Dale Thurgood was the previous dean I believe. So the program is bound to take off with Dr. Oie in charge. UGA has the money and political power to make it’s engineering program great.

Basically, right now it’s just a good engineering program. It will not compete with GT, but it’s a pretty good program. The program increased it’s ranking this year, and I’m anticipating it to increase again next year with the start of the new programs.

Engineering was added to aid UGA in it’s pursuit for more of a research university name. Engineering will bring Georgia a ton of research dollars. Basically, it’ll be the second best engineering program in the state.

Thanks for the response. It’s good to hear that it’s on the way up.

The full offerings at UGA include:

BS in Agricultural Engineering
BS in Biochemical Engineering
BS in Biological Engineering(specialization in biomedical, environmental or biochemical)
BS in Civil Engineering
BS in Computer Systems Engineering
BS in Electrical Engineering
BS in Environmental Engineering
BS in Mechanical Engineering

I’d say they will first focus on environmental, biological, agricultural and biochemical engineering. It would make sense when you look at where the school stands with ecological, biological and environmental/agricultural science.

I think it will complement Georgia Tech’s offerings well. Employers like to see universities producing a capable workforce.

Hello Future and Fellow UGA Engineers,
I am a former graduate of UGA Engineering . The UGA engineering degree holds value in the job market/work place in the US. Former graduate including myself are fine examples of this. GA Tech is a cut above the rest and an elite Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) school in the world. UGA has only recently established its College of Engineering. Very few people including engineering graduates across the country realize that UGA did not have college of engineering till recently. So the UGA overall academic reputation carries over in these instances. In that regards UGA College of Engineering does not have departmental boundaries and encompasses STEM fields, faculty and research across the campus.

UGA’s new engineering majors will all gain accreditation in due time (couple of years). Examples of these majors are civil, electrical and mechanical. UGA engineering will gain prominence over the next decade or two. In the next 20 years or so UGA will have solid reputation in Engineering similar to UC Boulder, Arizona State, Clemson, Auburn, UT Knoxville, U Missouri, U Alabama, Oregon State, U Conn, Iowa State, Rutgers, Washington State, LSU, Texas Tech etc.

UGA is in a unique situation to attract the brightest STEM students in the state of GA to engineering due to overflow from GA Tech and Hope Scholarship (for in-state GA students). These students would to-date leave GA for afore-mentioned established engineering schools in neighboring states. The caliber/quality of student will keep rising. UGA Engineering has nearly doubled enrollment in just two years to the tune of 1314 students. The staggering number of applicants (due to higher number of GA high school graduates seeking engineering at Flagship school) coupled with more resources, program accreditation and new novel engineering majors such as pharmaceutical engineering at UGA will prompt a surge in engineering ranking.

Do your part fellow engineering & STEM applicants and apply to UGA Engineering. GA Tech is a crown jewel now lets make UGA the shining model of GA Engineering. Apply to the engineering programs at UGA for the quality of life, overall academic reputation, post graduation job opportunities, networking in GA, great resources, services, facilities, libraries, and pursuit of happiness in a great college town. Best of luck. Keep up the good work. Take care and best wishes.
