Engineering at uiuc!!!

What is the acceptance rate for Engineering at uiuc. is it hard to get into?

From what I’ve read on this forum, the acceptance rate is actually higher than you’d think, but that’s because it is “self-selective” (I think that’s the term someone used). This means that most people know that the standard is high to get in, therefore many kids who don’t think they’re qualified just don’t apply. The school receives relatively fewer applications and most of the applicants are top students.

The middle 50% of students who were admitted to the College of Engineering in 2009 have an ACT of 30 - 33, and/or an SAT of 1920 - 2150 with an HSPR of 92% - 98%. It is my understanding that approximately 70% of the applicants to CoE are accepted, but Jax is correct in that the applicant pool is self-selective.

can i get more comments?? bummppp

Engineering’s freshman enrollment goal is 1200 per year (they usually end up with somewhat more or a little less). Numbers vary from year to year but these are usual approximations. To get 1200 enrollment, they need to admit about 2400 (i.e., based on past experience, they know that about half of the admits will go elsewhere). The total number of applicants per year is in the 3300 range. Thus, average admit rate is about 72%. Middle 50% range last year was as noted above. Vast majority who apply are in or above that range. If you are in or above that range, and your math subscore is good (30 or above ACT) and you have preferred course work (they like to see that students have had chemistry, physics and calculus which most applicants have had and they also like to see some honors and APs), and you don’t destroy yourself with bad essays, your chances of admission are very high. Variations exist per program; it is harder to get into bioengineering which has middle 50% ranges significantly higher than the engineering college as a whole, computer science and electrical or computer engineering are also somewhat higher.

Just note that majority of engineering admits are made in February and thus a lot who are later admitted get deferred in December.

That’s interesting. Any idea why?

I believe it was said somewhere that Engineering likes to look at a more complete group of applications before making the majority of it’s admit decisions, but I’m still hoping to see an admit on 12/11 for the sake of my sanity.

LOL! This is a reach for DS, so he won’t be heartbroken if he is rejected (or deferred) - but it sure would be nice to get a YES!
