Engineering/Bio colleges?

Hi People,

I would like some advice on strong undergraduate engineering/biology schools. I hope to pursue Biomedical Engineering, Biomolecular Engineering, Biochemical Engineering or maybe Biochemistry on it's own.

I have already applied to:
UNC-Chapel Hill
NC State
UVA
UNC-G (absolute backup school, if I went I would transfer)

I am considering:
U Pitt
Penn State
Virginia Tech
Drexel

Stats:
Female/Bi-racial
Homeschooled
State = North Carolina
SAT 1820 (R: 670, M:530, W: 620)
ACT 23 (Horrible! Not reporting this score.)
SAT Subject Tests: Literature (700), Biology E (650), US History (590), World History (610)

It is extremely difficult for me to take AP exams as a homeschooler. I found out (too late) I would have to contact the public schools 6 months ahead of time to reserve a seat. So I am providing colleges with detailed course descriptions and have 10 courses marked as "Honors" on my transcript (including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science). As for math- I am taking PreCalc/Trig this year, a little late. :(

Extracurricular/Other: Part-time job at library for over a year, children's ESL tutor for a year, 4 solid recommendation letters from non-family members, Vice President of local volunteer group, former Secretary of said volunteer group, 400 hours of volunteering since 9th Grade, former assistant editor of local teen newsletter, attended multiple leadership conferences....etc...

So in case you just skipped to the bottom. What is your opinion of the schools I am considering? Any you would add? I prefer they are on the east coast, no farther north than Pennsylvania.

Do UNC-CH and UNC-G even have engineering?

Seems like the main state schools in NC with engineering are:

NCSU (including biological, biomedical, and chemical)
NC A&T (including biological and chemical)
UNC Charlotte (but no biological, biomedical, or chemical)

Chapel Hill sorta has engineering- only Biomedical. However, I loved the school and have visited several times.

UNCG- No they don’t. But I needed an in-state backup and they invited me to apply for their honors program.

I ruled out UNC Charlotte because I had a very negative experience when I visited, and know several people who are tying to transfer because they hate the school. NC A&T …ruled out for various other reasons.

UAB in birmingham has the only biomedical engineering program in alabama

[UAB - The University of Alabama at Birmingham](http://www.uab.edu)

[UAB - Biomedical Engineering](<a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found)

[UAB - School Profile](<a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found)

also has fast track for engineering programs…bs and masters in 5 years [UAB - Degrees & Certificates](<a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found)

very strong chemistry and biology programs

excellent sci/tech honors program if interested in research…research from freshman year.

11k undergrads

urban campus

ranked 5th for diversity (26% AA) and 11th for student happiness (princeton review)
cost of oos is 20-24K (tuition, food and dorm)

your sat would give you 1200=26 act which means you would get automatic merit of 10K per year
Blazer Elite Scholarship
$15,000
Based on academic achievement (28-36 ACT and at least 3.0 GPA)
Blazer Gold Scholarship
$10,000
Based on academic achievement (26-27 ACT and at least 3.0 GPA)
Blazer Pride Scholarship
$5,000
Based on academic achievement (24-25 ACT and at least 3.0 GPA)

Fall 2011 First-Year Freshmen Estimated
First-Year Freshman Out-of-State
Tuition and Fees* $14,256
Books and Supplies** $1000
Meal Plan $450 - $3,894
Total $15,706 - $19,150
Residence Hall (Blazer/Camp Hall)*** $5,200
Grand Total $20,906 - $24,350

suite or apartment style dorms (so meal plan can be easily reduced as there are full kitchens in room)

If UNC-G does not have your desired major, and you would try to transfer away anyway, why not use community college followed by transfer to NCSU or UNC-CH as your safety instead? It would be cheaper than using UNC-G in the effective role of a community college.
