As many of you know, I am an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Arkanas - Fort Smith. I run an engineering camp each summer and I want to invite all high school students going into their senior year in fall 06 to apply for my camp. Here's some details:

University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Engineering Camp
July 16-21st, 2006
Cost: FREE

The camp participants stay in new, luxury apartments on the UA Fort Smith campus. Students do engineering activities such as building a mini-bike, a wind tunnel experiment and building an electric motor. The camp also has an engineering project that is sponsored by a local company, which students will conduct at the company site. Industrial tours, a banquet with local industry leaders and various fun nightly activities (such as go-karts) are also included. Every student receives a TI Voyage 200 calculator as well as $100 in bookstore gift certificates. Additional prizes are given to competition winners.

While everything is free, I cannot provide funding for transportation. We had a student from this board who came to the camp last summer, perhaps I can get him to comment on how much fun he had.

Camp participants are selected based on ACT, interest in engineering, high school GPA and teacher/counselor recommendation. Only 15 students will be selected for the camp. If you are interested in the camp, please PM me with your address and I will send you an application.

This sounds like a fun camp but it fails to give an accurate depiction of what engineering is really like. The camp would worsen the glut of scientist and engineers in the US economy.

I think it sounds excellent, and quite representative of the actual engineering profession, and if I didn't have to work this summer (and if I weren't 24), I'd love to go.

Glut of scientists and engineers? Dude, you're completely off your rocker.

I think it sounds wonderful, and if only I was in my senior year, then I would definitely go. The fact that I am 11, stops me from going. Will the camp be still running when I'm in 12th grade? How many girls are in there normally? I was in a computer programming camp and there was not one single girl, and 40 boys.(except for me, of course) I must say, I was very lonely. I heard many boys, in fact just call me,
"The Girl". I found that very insulting. thanks

We've had over 75 applications for our 15 slots but I'm still looking for more applications. Anyone who has excelled in high school and is going into their senior year this fall should definately apply.
