Engineering Career Help

To make this easy I will set up the following in numbers and you can pick any/all to respond to. In advance, thanks for your help and I'm new to this so sorry if I do something incorrectly.

1- I want a career in the alternative/renewable energy industry. After some research, I ended up with careers such as : Environmental, Chemical, and Mechanical Engineer.
Q- Which engineer type would be best for the renewable energy industry?

2- I read a thread on CC where people were talking about how engineers are having trouble finding jobs.
Q- Isn't engineering one of the best option for a future career?
Q- If not, then why were these people stating this?
Q- If so, then how secure is an engineering career?

3- I am interested in working with renewable energy, such as: biofuel, solar power, wind power ect. and possibly building new devices for renewable energy.
Q- What Minors and Majors are best for someone who wants to be an Engineer and work with Renewable Energy?

Thanks and let me know if you have any questions regarding my posts.

Likely Chemical and Electrical. Environmental too.

Sure Engineers are having trouble finding jobs. Oh but if you’d like to compare it to the trouble everyone else is having in the current economy then no, none at all.

Environmental? Not all schools offer minors that explicitly, just check out your school and see what minors they have. And if they don’t have any in that direction then just take the classes as electives. No harm done.

Looks like we’re in the same boat! I’m also interested in renewable energies. I’m majoring in mechanical but that is because my school offers a minor in energy systems specially for mechanical engineers which focuses on efficient energy systems. But anyway…

 1. I’d say chemical
 2. I think people might be worrying about the outsourcing of jobs but engineers still have really good job opportunities.
 3. Environmental but it’s still a new field so not all schools offer it. As for minors there could be a various amount of courses relating to energy and sustainability etc I’m not exactly sure of all the minors but I would assume the most common minor is energy and sustainability.

I’m not an expert, but it seems like electrical and chemical directly relate to new renewable energy research. Environmental involves remediation and stuff like that, but I know they do LEED certification too.

Those ideas aren’t contradictory. Like, other jobs might be even harder to find.

I’m not aware of many fields with better opportunities.
