I already posted this awhile ago, but the thread disappeared and my grades have slipped a little since then....I'm thinking that I'm a 30% chance of getting in to either ME or EE.

Does UIUC take 6 or 7 semesters in your transcript?
I also heard that the ACT is weighted pretty heavily in the application process, is this true?

UIUC takes 6 semesters. No mid year report is considered.
I had a 31 ACT and a slightly higher unweighted GPA, although my semesters 4-6 were spectacular as 1-3 were horrid, and I got into Materials Science and Engineering. A friend of mine had about the same ACT score and a GPA of around 2.8 unweighted and got in to electrical.

You have a pretty good chance, considering your class schedule is not a cupcake. If you have a favorable grade trend, I’d say you are in great shape to get in to at least one.

thanks for the response. My grades have essentially been straight Bs with a couple of As thrown in, but the past year was pretty rough ( I got 1 A, 1 C, and the rest Bs). Weighted Gpa was still a 4.0 because it was all honors/AP, but UW was a hair under 3. Also, all of my Math classes have been Bs (except for the one C this year). I was hoping that the double acceleration would make up for that. Many of my As also came from English, I think I got an 1 A in chem and 1 in physics. Have I killed my chances yet? haha

You are a strange applicant, but from what knowledgeable members on this board have said, engineering emphasizes performance in math/science classes and the ACT more than other selective colleges at UIUC, such as business. Your chances aren’t dead.

Your chances look like they would be heavily stunted by your GPA and class rank. Is your school known as a very competitive one, or is there some other legitimate reason for that, such as the difficulty of the accelerated classes you are taking? I would say that you would easily be accepted without a doubt, and likely to get a decent scholarship, if not for your GPA, though you still seem like you may have a very good chance despite that.

Thanks again for the input. @Cowart I was thinking that my GPA was the only real killer…my class rank is only a little under the middle range. I don’t personally think that my school is incredibly competitive, but apparently it’s a pretty decent public school, and yes, my GPA has definitely taken a hit from the difficulty of the classes that I’ve taken.

I think you have a fair chance. One point notice: pick your major carefully. Once you get in, to transfer from EE to ME you need a GPA of 3.8. You r taking Calc III thru UIUC? That is a tough course. My roommate got A+ for Cal II and B for III. This is not an easy course. Be aware.

Is the GPA transfer req the same for EE to ME? I’m also taking Calc III in a HS independent study program (UIUC curriculum), and it will span all of senior year for me, which I hope will make it easier.

transfer req for ME and AE is always 3.8, regardless of your previous major. Its been 3.8 for many yrs. Plus it is hard to get 3.8 in Engineering.
