That's about the basics right now... Tough school to get into. Does he have a shot? This is actually No.4 on his list but very important to him. He really likes all his choices.

Hi! The admission to Maryland engineering is two-pronged. First your application is reviewed for admission to Maryland, and, if accepted then your application is sent to Clark (engineering) for their review (which is even tougher/more competitive admit since it is a LEP - limited enrollment program).

I think your son is a solid admit to the university, without question. For engineering, he potentially sounds pretty solid as well. The only question I have is that you gave ACT breakdown scores. For the SAT, it is true that Maryland only considers CR + M. However, for the ACT score, to the best of my knowledge, they actually look at the composite score. So, if your son’s ACT composite score is similar to his breakdown scores you listed, he is golden. If is it different by a few points, it could have an impact on his engineering admissions decision, if that makes sense. His ACT composite score needs to be the equivalent of the SAT CR +M range of 1320-1460 (which is the average engineering SAT admission range).

maryversity regarding B/K selection does the separate schools ie: Clark (engineering) have any input or specific number of candidates?

No, B/K has nothing to do with Clark School of Engineering, per se (or any other individual school/major). B/K candidates, from what I have gathered, are those honor college invitees that are basically ivy league candidates. The fact is that if you have the stats for B/K, you will also have the stats for acceptance into engineering, but not the other way around.

Interestingly, over the past few admissions cycles, I have seen students that were invited to honors college or college park scholars yet were not accepted into engineering. So, there are students that are very smart, have good stats, but still don’t get accepted into Clark engineering for one reason or another simply due to the limited number of “seats” available.

You need to understand that with engineering, it is possible to do an “in-school transfer” after your first year. So, it’s not really that big a deal - more of a hiccup. You simply take all of the required “gateway” courses and get the required minimum grades/gpa, apply, and you are accepted into engineering. It is not a competitive admission as an in-school transfer if you meet all the requirements. (Note that this is different than the Smith School of Business which IS still extremely competitive as an in-school transfer).

I think you will get in to both, based on my son’s experience. Do you know what your overall weighted GPA is? When I called two years ago they we re looking for 4.2 weighted, and at least 700 on math SAT. Good luck.

Thank You Mary> I thought that due to the two-pronged concept that the individual schools may have influence regarding premire candidates. 1214mom my S2 has a 4.217 weighted GPA with a 1520 SAT, 800M-720CR and has applied to Clark. He will not be able to go to UMD w/o a B/K award because S1 is a freshman at UMD paying full OOS tuition.

Okay update on new data…

His ACT overall comp is equal to 2050 compared to the SAT.
His ACT comp for M & CR is equal to 1420 on the SAT.
I guess there are a few ways that colleges can look at these numbers based on the charts that they use. Ballpark is going to be good enough.
He only scored what is equal to a 630 on the writing.
I found an admissions ACT / GPA index chart which has him at a 129.
The selectivity index has him at an 800.

@ 3units - Then he is definitely golden! FYI, writing is not considered for admission to Maryland, so no worries, not that 630 is a bad score.

@ bonee26 - FYI, there are more scholarships than just B/K…while of course B/K is the only one that has the potential to be full ride (it’s either full or partial which is half), there is also the Presidential Scholarship that can range anywhere for OOS from a few thousand all the way up to almost as much as a partial B/K. So, there may be more potential to have two Terps than you realize…

Also, while Clark does not have input on B/K (which is from the university), they (Clark) do have their own engineering scholarships for students with stellar stats. There are two available specifically for incoming freshman. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland)
After the first year, there are also departmental (engineering) merit scholarships available for returning (upperclass) students if you put in an application.
