Engineering Chances

Hi, I am a Texas resident in his senior year who is looking to major in Electrical Engineering and stay in-state for college. The schools I am considering are UT Austin, Texas A&M, UT Arlington, UNT, and UTD. I am also not sure if I should apply to any other schools like Texas Tech or U of H.

Class Rank is 424/1397 which is Top 30%
SAT is 1820 and a 1240 out of 1600
ACT is 25
Extracurriculars include 4 years of high school soccer, 3 years of soccer refereeing, band, NSHS, national honor society, and about 50 hours of community service.

So I just want to know that since my class rank is low should I even apply to UT and A&M or should I stick with other schools, and what are my chances in general to get in.
Thanks

talking with your HS counselor who should familiar with the Texas rules for admission would be a smart move.

1397? Woah, must be a long graduation.
I’d say apply everywhere. You may be surprised. $50 or so is a small price to pay for what could be an acceptance.
Considering your sat score is close to mine, I’d say you have a fair chance at everywhere.
Don’t forget that the classes you took matter a lot too. It’s not as much how many APs, but which ones.
I’m interested in majoring in EE, but I’m from ny, so I feel ya.

If you are not an auto admit to UT then your grades and scores are extremely important to compete for the remaining slots. Unfortunately your scores are not going to work well for that. Definitely talk to your GC about what are the best school options.

Even for the auto-admit students, getting into engineering school is not that easy. You do need a higher SAT score for UT Austin. You would have a much better chance at the other UT campus and UH.
