Can someone please tell me the average class size for the freshman engineering classes? Not the Honors classes, just the regular Calc, Physics, English, etc.

Are they all 200 - 300 lecture style classes?

Thanks.

I’m not sure about the grad rate, but I can give you class sizes!

From my first semester:

Calc 1: Large classroom, at first there were about 50 people in it, but as the semester went on lots of people skipped.

Physics: Lecture hall, extremely crowded, around 250 people. Not too many people skipped this class.

Chem: Lecture Hall. Again, it was crowded to the point that every seat was filled in the first half of the semester, but that number decreased as people started skipping lectures. Around 300 people at first, but by the end the lecture hall was half-filled.

Matlab: Lecture Hall, just about empty because the lecturer was horrible and most people skipped it.

Second Semester (so far):

Calc 2: Large classroom, around 70 people. But the failure rate of this course is very high, so I’d imagine it will drop to a lower number.

Physics: Class is in the same large lecture hall as before, but the class size is extremely small. Only about 50-60 people show up. I’d imagine that this is due to people skipping or failing the first semester of physics.

Expository Writing: Small classroom, around 15-20 people is an average-sized class.

Statics: Small lecture hall, probably around 100 people. So many people skip this class, maybe a third of the people, that the class size is very small.

Engineering Orientation: Small lecture hall, attendance is required so everyone will be there. They all fall asleep though. It’s around 100 students, maybe a little less.

Chem lab: Each lab room holds 24 students.

Each lecture for chem, physics, calc, and statics has a recitation. This is run by a TA in a small classroom of about 20-30 people. The Matlab recitation is in a computer lab. Attendance in recitations is taken, and these sessions are very useful.

You’ll notice that despite the large lecture hall atmosphere, LOTS of people skip their classes. This is not a very good decision and I’d advise you to go to all your classes :)

Thanks for the detailed description. I am concerned about being able to learn with so many kids so I’m trying to figure out if Rutgers is a good choice for me. I’m comparing it to Drexel which I know also has some larger lecture style classes.

I was down to Rutgers and Drexel last year and chose Rutgers :)

The good thing about lecture halls is that you can always sit in one of the front rows if you need to, and if you find the class easy you can sit in the middle and relax more. The school of engineering is relatively small compared to some of the others, so I haven’t had any problems with getting extra help, going to office hours, etc.

This is just me, but I like it that there are so many other people in my classes. I live in Barr Hall, which is first year engineering special interest housing, so I have at least a few friends in each class, and it’s great for doing homework and studying. And from what I hear, after freshman year, the engineering classes stay a very small size.
