Engineering Classes

So in the registration booklet or whatever it lists reccomended classes for each Engineering path, including undecided. In undecided it lists, EAS, Math, Physics, Chemistry, and an elective or writing or something. It also says your not supposed to take more than 5.5 CU and you nbeed special permission to do it. So my question is…all those classes total to 6 CU if you have a lab for both physics and chem…So then do they only expect you to take one or the other…or are you only supposed to have a lab for one of them.

EAS101 is a terrible terrible class.

And as far as lab...it depends on your major. Some actually don't require a lab. And if you do a lab in both, they might just expect you to take 5.

i dont have a decided major though

I would just keep the lab for now, and make change when you get there (when you have a chance to talk to department advisors, etc.) Don't freak out about course registrations because registration is pretty easy at Penn, especially for classes with multiple sections. You'll be fine even arriving with no courses registered.

If you're undecided, I suggest you take an introductory engineering course in one of the engineering fields that interest you, instead of taking EAS101.

well if i knew which i was interested in most then i'd be decided..lol...besides this is the first that I've heard of EAS being crappy

What engineering interests you? Honestly, EAS is just beyond terrible, unless you're a half brained slack jawed heathen...now this is Penn, so that's a definite posibility, but I'd bet against yourself and just find an intro class that seems interesting and will count towards SOMETHING no matter what and skip EAS.

What do you DO in EAS? Why is it so bad?

You do terrible watered down experiments and dumb lab writeouts that are graded in a terribly random fashion, and basically it's just an excuse in stupidity. Avoid it at all costs. Maybe it was just the M&T section, but I know that more or less every M&T hated it...then again, most M&T's also hated management 100. MAybe it's an M&T thing, in that we can recognize stupid classes and summarily loathe them out of existence.

I think most PEOPLE hate Management 100

EAS sounds pretty craptacular... but I don't think I was ever going to take it in the first place :P

EAS101 wasn't totally craptacular, but I do sort of wish I had taken an actual engineering class instead.

Yay to a semester wasted.

anyone who liked the class?

Actually many people are not even sure if they want to be engineers, especially pre meds. engineering gpas are low, so after the first semester there was an outflow of bioengineer(prolly pre meds). EAS 101 will not help your cause, your best bet is to enroll in a specific intro course..., the engineering disciplines have their overlaps and the differences, so you should be able to figure out what you would like, you CANT be that open minded.

its not that im thaaat open-minded..although i am pretty open minded..its just that i don't think i have a solid enough grasp on all the types of engineering to really pick one

What are your interests?

Honestly, taking anything is better than EAS. Even underwater basketweaving. Just not MGMT101.

I like Physics more than the other sciences...but then again I haven't taken bio since freshman year...so who knows

Are you learning towards MechE, EE, CBE, BioE..?

Naturally, you're expected to take the Chem lab and Phys 140 (which does not have a lab). All pre-meds though, take Phys 150, which includes the lab.

the problem is that im not leaning towards anything...its frustrating...my dads an electrical engineer so ive been exposed to that and its cool to me but i dont wanna jump into that without exploring other options...cause i dont think i know enough about all the different types of engineering to make a good decision...plus it doesnt help that im a pretty indecisive person

I'm late to jump on the bandwagon but I will definitely say do not take EAS101. Although it won't really kill your GPA (avg lab grade became B+ish, and they don't curve the class), it really does not help you decide at all. They give you a random lab every week and give you some "group-skills" seminars/sessions.

I would advise you to take the intro class for electrical engineering. You will have enough friends in other disciplines so that you can peek through their notes once in a while or ask what they do, and they'll be able to give you a far better idea of what the major is than some lab where you cut out a shape from a block of plexiglass or play around with some wires. The labs just aren't in depth enough for you to get anything out of them
