Engineering College

I am looking for a college with a good engineering program. I don't want a party school and I don't really want to go east of the Rocky Mts, but its not a big deal. I don't want too big of a school.

Stats:
GPA 4.0
7 AP classes, other honors classes
SAT 2200
ACT 34

Other (I don't know if it matters):
Habitat for Humanity
Knowledge Bowl
Eagle Scout

Thanks!

What is your home state? Do you need financial aid?

I live in Washington, I don’t need financial aid.

Cal Tech
Cal Poly SLO
New Mexico Tech (in Rockies)
Gonzaga (maybe they have engineering?)
Evergreen State

I would definitely look at the New Mexico Tech as a safety school.

Colorado School of Mines.

Rice for sure… it seems like a very good fit for you. Engineering here is very strong, especially chemical, electrical, and biomedical. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I am going to include Eastcoast schools and some larger schools that meet most of your criteria:

California Institute of Technology
Carnegie Mellon University
Cornell University
Harvey Mudd College
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Princeton University
Rice University
Stanford University
University of California-Berkeley
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Washington (your safety and probably close to a full ride)

engineering programs for most of the engineering disciplines are acredited by ABET, which means you’ll cover the same overall material at any acredited school. The rep of of the school controls the overall rep of the program for undergrads; a school that tends to enroll brighter kids is going to have a more challenging engineering program and this will be reflected in who interviews on campus, etc. One thing to keep in mind is that the dropout rate for engineering at most schools is 1/3 to 1/2 !! There’s no way to predict what’s going to happen to you, but given the numbers that switch you might want to choose a school you’d be comfortable at should you decide engineering isn’t right for you.

Sorry, but I don’t think a 4.0 GPA is strong enough to get into some of those programs mentioned. I’m not coming down on you, but those aforementioned Engineering programs are top notch and I think your GPA will hurt you. The 2200 and ACT34 are strong numbers which will definitely help get you into a good program. But don’t count on UWash as a ‘safety.’ Not sure you should even count on Harvey Mudd or CIT. I would try for some UCs, but you may have to settle for UC Irvine or UC Santa Barbara.

I would suggest taking the SAT over again and shoot for a higher score. You still have time.

Lagunal, you are assuming the GPA is weighted while I assumed it was UW.

OP, which is it?
