Engineering Computer Requirements Published

Hi,

The Computer Requirement For Summer/Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 Entering Students has been posted: Computer Requirement For Summer/Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 Entering Students | www.eng.vt.edu

There have been previous discussions about the need for a Tablet PC so I thought I would pass on the link.

In Summary the new requirements allow for a Windows 7 Slate in addition to a laptop but still discourage other types of external USB Tablets like Wacom Bamboo etc.

Bravo, VT, for being complete idiots on the computer issue yet again. Hope that money the tablet manufacturers pay you to force-feed their inferior product is worth the middle finger grads give the CoE when they come asking for donations.

I’ve heard people give the advice of buying a separate writing tablet.

[Interactive Pen Displays and Tablets | Wacom Americas](http://www.wacom.com/en.aspx)

and just buying a normal, decent laptop.

It appears as if the “student technology council” is actively trying to discourage students from using the combination of technologies that offer the most capabilities for the lowest price.

"Not Acceptable - External USB tablets that do not allow you to directly write on the screen (like the Bamboo). Please see our policy on “Deviation from the Requirement”.

•Hand to eye coordination required that uses additional cognitive resources
•Lacks pen on paper feel and experience
•Lacks accuracy of a real pen
"

This bureaucratic approach reflects poorly on the college IMO.
