Engineering Computers

I know this has been brought up before, but I may be searching the wrong thing. Anyways, is it REQUIRED that engineers have a Dell/PC? I really want to buy a Macbook, but if I'm going to have to buy another one anyways, then it wouldn't be worth it. Is it a certain program that you use, and can it run on Macs or is there a Mac version of it?

Thank you!

S started in engineering and the Dell was a required purchase then. It was built into the financial aid decision and COA.

I think you should call engineering and ask. The requirements have changed. When my son started, the policy had changed to allow other computers as long as the student was absolutely certain it could run the required software. I don’t know if that worked well or not, and I don’t know if the policy has changed again or not.

S started in 2002, so my frame of reference is old in terms of technology.

i am doing engineering and the answer is yes, you are required to have one.

whoistebow, you didnt answer the question. they are asking if you have to buy vandys specific computer, or just a computer with the software.

At engineering day they said: you can have any type of computer you’d like as long as it has certain functional requirements (memory, speed etc.)

I’m a vandy engineer and I went ahead and bought the computer they recommended. I regret buying that model a lot. Buy whatever computer you want, even a Mac, just make sure you run boot camp in order to run windows. The only downside to macs is their shortcut keys and version of Office is different so you need to be able to deal with a couple of hangups every now or then.

you aren’t required to have a dell. they pretend like it has a discount attached to it, but it is much more expensive than buying it through dell.

oh, you also don’t really even need windows; i know people who run linux and macosx just fine in cs and eece
