<p>I am filling out my course selection sheet and I just noticed how "preplanned" it is. I always assumed I'd minor or at least take a lot of courses in Spanish, but with the format they give it doesn't seem possible!</p>

<p>So I was just curious if Engineering majors minor in languages ever? For the elective could I take a Spanish course instead of PHIL and take THEO for Seminar?</p>
<p>In the breakdown of how many classes you can take (pg. 16 of Academic Guide), it shows that you can only take 0-6 credits of electives (which Spanish would be under) and that means only two classes. Unless you walk in with significant and I mean significant credit in Spanish, I don’t know if it would be possible to get a minor in Spanish as 6 credits means you only get 2 classes (unless you spent summer at ND).</p>
<p>if you have a lot of AP credit coming into ND from High School this could allow you to avoid taking some of the intro courses like math, physics, chem, history, social science, or english. if you have credit in these, then you can skip them and those classes basically become open electives for you. So if you get a 4/5 in Calc BC, then you have two classes open up the first year for electives.</p>
<p>I had about 30 AP credits coming in, asked for spanish, and was given theo instead and told I could think about spanish “later on” aka forget about it because it would be such a pain to fit it into my schedule</p>
<p>most of first semester is by luck of the draw b/c you don’t really have any #1 choices instead they are just a,b,c,d which has no impact on which you prefer. The only guaranteed classes are those that your program requires</p>
<p>You might want to see if you are indeed going to stick with engineering–so many freshman engineering intents switch majors after fall semester because of the intense workload and even more drop out after spring semester. The philo and theo requirements are for all First Year Studies whether you major in engineering or spanish or business. It would be a safe bet to try to knock out 1 or both during fall semester (take one as a seminar and the other as an elective). Also, don’t forget that you will have a PE requirement to fulfill as well. While the PE may not be that demanding, it will take away from time for other classes.</p>
<p>You don’t have to take philo or theo, those are just recommendations. But you should be aware that Notre Dame does not offer a Spanish minor (I believe this is because they figure everyone would try to do it and it would overwhelm the department). However, you should be able to take some Spanish courses later on, especially if you have AP credit that will free up your schedule a bit.</p>
