Engineering Coursework

I'm majoring in Physics at UT Austin. I plan to complete a good amount of upper-division coursework in civil engineering before graduating. However, I may not complete all the required coursework to obtain the civil engineering degree. I will receive the Physics degree, though. Additionally, I plan to take the FE exam when I graduate.

Is it still possible for me to get civil engineering jobs when I graduate through this route without technically receiving the degree?

Thanks in advance!

From what I understand, ABET accreditation is extremely important in civil engineering and you won’t obtain it without a CivE degree. I’m sure someone with more knowledge on the topic can give you deeper insight.

Larry: I kind of doubt it? It will either be almost impossible or not possible at all. What classes are you taking? Why not just major in Civil engineering and get a minor in Physics?

Not having an ABET accredited degree will make finding a job as a civil engineer quite difficult. It is one of the requirements to sit for the PE exam for licensure and having the PE is very important to advance in the civil engineering field.

If the degree is Engineering Physics it could be ABET accredited. Not sure if that is the case at UT Austin.
