Engineering Degree

Hello,
So i have been having this dilemma for the past couple of years. I have been on and off of schooling because I did not know what I wanted to study. However, Engineering has always fascinated me and that's what I want to pursue. I have always been the type who wants to invent something but can't figure things out perfectly since i am not an engineer. I am 24 years old but it worries me that i will have to go back another 4 years of college. I am going to enroll at a community college in Rhode Island, to keep things from being expensive. My problem is that I am young, and want to travel the world but schooling is important to me as well. But i feel like i will never be happy in life unless i won't be able to travel the world without school getting in the way. Also, my father started a business recently and he builds home foundations on the water and other marine construction. I want to someday take the business over, but I'm not exactly sure if I need engineering for that type of work. I know he works with engineers a lot such as civil and structural engineers for getting soils and payload for the foundations of homes. So, my question is, it worth it to me to study engineering, would it help me take over my fathers business? Which, we would not have to hire engineers, and so that i could engineer things myself?
