Engineering desktop applications

Hey all, im just surveying your preferred/prevalent programs and applications for engineering, preferably ME. Things such as *CAD, MATLAB etc.

Id appreciate open source (windows) alternatives as well. Im going to have a lot of free time, and id think it would benefit me to start tinkering with stuff on my own; as well as peruse how-to/tutorial sites, thanks!

SolidWorks for CAD – Student version is ~$120

FreeMat – A shareware version of MATLAB

PSPICE – Good for circuits. Not my favorite program, but it’s helpful in checking solutions.

I’m interested in this too. I feel like I need to learn to use some of this stuff on my own, but with how busy I am with school already, that’s easier said than done :/

Solidwork’s “Draftsight” is a good AutoCAD light, 2D, program

I like JMP for statistical analysis, not sure if there is a freeware version

Other than that I tend to do just well with Visio and Excel for most of my projects.

Wow thanks guys. I’ll be sure to contribute if I come across any programs myself
