I was accepted to the Industrial Engineering major and I was wondering if I would be able to double major with economics too at UIUC in 4 years? Is that a possiblity, I know Northwestern has it.

bumpbumpbump

Possible. You would need to take, in addition to normal courses taken by engineers in first and second year, courses normally taken by economics majors and then apply for a double major beginning junior year. Since engineering has a lot of required courses, you will find it difficult to do both schedules. You also have to meet the Gen Ed requirements of both engineering and A&S colleges. Overall you would need to take about 30 course hours more than doing only engineering, which means you would likely add about an extra year to any four year program.

There are a lot of engineering students who start as freshman with the belief that they will double major. It usually only takes a semester or two for almost all of them to come to their senses and drop the idea.

Alright thanks, in that case I’ll probably stick to the Engineering major and minor in Economics. That seems more manageable, thanks for the input!

Note: U of I does not offer an Economics minor. The only Econ-ish minor is Environmental Economics and Law.
