Engineering floor in Carpenter - tomb or not?

There's a good 50/50 chance my son will enter BME at Marquette next fall. I'm a big believer in the so-called learning communities, which for him would mean the men in engineering floor(s) in Carpenter. I think. Right??

Anyway, I see reference on this forum to Carpenter being a tomb and that McCormick is the fun freshman dorm. I'm chagrined by this because 1) the rooms at McCormick are tiny and 2) I hate to see social priorities trump academic ones although I know they are extremely important. I think spending freshman year in a learning community is an excellent idea.

So I'm interested in anyone's perspective on Carpenter specifically. thanks.

Carpenter is a sophomore dorm, and sophomore year is not like freshman year in terms of dorm life (a lot more subdued, you’ve made your friends at this point). Thats probably where the ‘tomb’ comments come from.

I think the engineering floors will be fine, they will be other freshmen too like your son.

Thank you. How would you characterize a typical Sat in Carpenter vs. McCormick? How about a typical Wed night?

I’m a believer in work hard/play hard, which means quiet during the week but on Sat night students should be having fun and not playing video games in their rooms or watching TV.

Thanks, Beastman, for this thread, and welcome again to Hoya guy!

I, too, am very curious about dorms, wanting the learning community of Carpenter, but not the tomb on the weekend.

Y’all kind of beat me to the punch on a Carpenter thread because I actually stumbled upon something while trying to find a video tour of the dorms.

I found an old youtube video thread that was named something about Carpenter and car accidents. Anyway, I was in stitches, bad choice of terms, in the tally of car accidents that occur on the freeway which the rooms in Carpenter have a view of. Yes, it’s kind of morbid, but since I deal with this every day in my work, I’m kind of immune to it.

What really caught my attention was the date of the videos, in late March, and there was still clearly snow on the ground. I immediately called son to the computer to show him that. That brought a major grin to his face. He is so ready for snow.

Please, more info on Carpenter. It can’t be that boring. I mean, it is coed, right?

Please send or post the link if you can find it. S slept with windows shut for first few nights due to the noise of that interchange. He would so appreciate the dark humor.

Ah, yes. Snow in March. Sometimes in October. But that’s usually the kind that doesn’t last long, just enough to get your attention. The 6-12" at a time in mid January is the kind to worry about–or look forward to, depending on your perspective. : )

We in the midwest have a number of tired old weather truisms that we just can’t get enough of. One favorite is “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.” And another is “March is the snowiest month,” which is true but as 1tgmom points out, it comes in big dumps and goes quickly. So Milwaukee gets a winter but it’s not the toughest in the midwest, that’s for sure. Although for a New Orleans native that’s probably splitting hairs.

1tgmom, can’t find the carpenter accident link again. Sometimes I google and get to clicking and hit something. I think it was dated in from 2006 or so, and it may have been a facebook thing, as I seem to remember pictures of kids on the bottom of the link. Not sure. Anyway, maybe somebody else will read this post and find it for us again so we can show the kids.

Found the Facebook page. Wasn’t sure that was it. Thanks!

I think I was the one who made the tomb comment about Carpenter!
I talked to my future DIL who lived in Carpenter and asked about the Engineering floor. She said the guys who lived there when she did all seemed to “hibernate” even on the weekends.
I would NEVER recommend McCormick to anyone who wants to study at all. My nephew described it as loud from 6 at night to 4:30 in the morning every day of the week.

^^Sounds perfect for my son (unfortunately);)^^

Now, when you say they “hibernate”, are they still there?

Just worried that Carpenter may be the “suitcase” dorm, ie, the smart locals live there and go home on the weekend.

No, I think they have as diverse a student population as far as hometowns as any dorm.
By hibernate she meant they study all weekend.

The engineering floor kids that I knew last year were WILD. Good guys, but they partied their brains out on the weekend (including most Thursday nights). Of course, I only knew about 1/2 the guys on one floor. The girls that I knew on the female engineering floor were a bit more subdued, though.

Just FYI, I lived in McCormick freshman year as BME, ended up with a 3.86. Just go to the library if you want to study. Oh, and invest in some earplugs for getting a good night’s sleep.

So where are you living as a sophomore?

That is awesome that you got a 3.86 in BME!

Thanks for the dorm advice.

Did you not get to live in Carpenter because you were BME, not regular engineering, or did you just “luck out” and get McCormick?
