I will be starting college in the fall of 2009. I was initially going to take bio or chem like most pre med hopefuls, but I realized I would be choosing those majors only because most others do. I would not be choosing those majors because I wanted to study them. I have been considering switching to mechanical engineering because it is of more interst to me. I have talked to a lot of people about this, some say I'm taking the most difficult route to med school, others say I do not truly want to be a doctor. My question: is it a sane decision to do mechanical engineering as a pre med.

Nobody can tell you whether you'll be able to get a 3.6+ in Engineering

haha...i am bme (freshman) and i considered swithing to mechanical because it is some pretty cool stuff sometimes..but i got pretty much the same response you did...haha...i think you should go for it but consider BME and look more towards biomechanics if that is your thing..that way you are sticking to bio-ness a little..i have specific reasons for doing biomechanics but i wont get into all of that :)

its not necessary to bump up our thread when it is already on the first page..get yourself some patience...

If you want to do engineering, do engineering. There are certainly engineering pre-meds that get into med school. But your GPA will probably suffer. On the other hand, if you later decide not to go the med school route, you'll have a marketable degree to fall back on.
