Engineering Graphics and Design Class?

Is the Engineering Graphics and Design class that is recommended for freshman year (either that or Rhet) hard? Is it time consuming? Would you recommend taking it first semester or second when college life is more routine? Seems like a cool class...or is it a pain?

Hi Roxy,

If you’re referring to GE 101…here goes. Maybe someone else had a different experience, but I found that class to be incredibly time consuming, especially for a mere 3 credit hours. You will have 2 lectures a week + (1) 1 hour sketching lab + (1) 2 hour modeling/CAD lab. There is no final but instead 2 written exams, 2 computer exams, and one big final project. The final project is pretty time consuming. The class is fun if you’re into sketching and CAD software, but I personally found it rather time consuming and hence not too fun.

Sorry to sound like a downer. I took it second semester freshman year which I would recommend since you’re more settled into campus life. That’s just my 2 cents. :)

Thanks cooljay…that is what I thought. Sounds like second semester can be a real wake up call with Chem, Calc, Physics and this class…yikes…is this where kids drop out of engineering?

Hmm…not sure. I never actually personally knew anyone who dropped although there were always kids where I’d later wonder “hmm…where’d ____ go?.” It’ll be a tough semester but that’s the easiest of the physics sequence and chem really isn’t too bad. You’ll just be in class a lot, but I’m sure you’ll manage. :)

I forget, what major are you? GE?

Civil major. Everyone I tell that to tells me how hard engineering is and that is will be so much work etc…makes me nervous that I can’t have a social life with classes etc. I guess I have to stop listening and just figure it out for myself. I like Math and Science so I should do well in what I like…I also like to be social too…that is the balancing part.

Don’t listen. It’s highly manageable and can be a lot of fun. Stick with it, and I doubt you’ll regret it. :)
