My son is trying to make his biggest decision yet and we aren’t sure who to go to for advice. So, I’ll see what you all have to say :)

He wants either Civil or Mech engineering as his major. He is accepted to LSU’s school of engineering all expenses paid via husbands GI BIll. First choice is still Pomona which we haven’t heard from. If denied he could go CC route and try to transfer. We are from CA but we have summer orders to NOLA. He would have to move into my parents to do CC in CA. His biggest concern is landing a job in So Cal after graduation. He’s afraid he’ll be stuck in Louisiana. So our question is…If denied Pomona for fall, is it better to do CC in CA and transfer to Pomona to have a better chance at a CA career, or go to the for sure LSU route and take a chance? Is it that difficult to get job back in CA after LSU? Either way his college is covered financially.

Why not go to LSU and transfer to CPP in a year or two? From my son’s experience in CC in California, I am NOT impressed with California CCs. They are a JOKE. On the other hand, CPP might give preferences to transfers from California CCs.

I don’t see how where you go to school has an impact on getting a job in CA. That will depend on your major, grades, work/project experience, recommendations and most ominously, the California economy which is outside your control.

Uh, I’d stick with going to to a CC then transferring into a UC or one of the Cal Poly’s for engineering if he wants to live in California. I don’t know why he’d try and come back to California with a LSU degree. It’s not like he went off to MIT and then came back.

Go to a CC where they’ve got their crap together. I’m not an engineering major, but I took the same courses with all the prospective engineering transfers and felt that I got a quality education out of the math department at my CC. Physics was okay. My friend was able to jump into ME here at Cal Poly Pomona without too much trouble. Some community colleges even offer TAP (Transfer Alliance Program) if your son wants to have priority admission to UCLA (take honor courses) and with a high GPA can do TAG to a UC.

One of my old CC chemistry buddies originally had a pretty terrible SAT and was going to head directly to Long Beach for engineering as a freshman, but he ended up going to Cal Poly SLO as EE after being at CC. You can get into schools you didn’t get into as a freshman if you work hard enough.

If he does get into Cal Poly Pomona a good job is not guaranteed. Why? Well, obviously there is more competition.

So, in order to help you I will tell you some advice. My friend from CPP was an engineering major as well, and he built a solar-powered boat that competed against top schools like MIT, and they won against them as well. And the solar boat really boosted his resume, and was the main factor in landing him a job straight out of college, and he is making well over $76,000 a-year.

So in conclusion, if your son wants a job out of CPP or where ever he goes to, he must build his resume, do something impressive in other words. A college education is not a guarantee for a job, but a good resume is.

But if he doesn’t get into CPP I would recommend going to a CC.
