Engineering Honors - 2nd Choice

Hello everyone, I applied to UT by the priority deadline. My 1st choice was computer science in the College of Natural Sciences, and my 2nd choice was electrical/computer engineering in the College of Engineering.

Here is my background:

Asian Male
Academics:

AP classes and scores: Hum Geo, World Hist, European Hist, U.S. Hist, BC Calc, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics C (both), English Language, Spanish Language , received 5s on AP exams

SAT: 2330 on old one, 1540 on new one (darn got a 1590 after submitting my app), 36 ACT
SAT Subject: 800s on Math 2, Physics, Chemistry; 750 on Spanish reading

Senior course load:
AP CS
AP Bio
AP English Literature
AP Spanish literature
AP Macroecon
AP Microecon
AP U.S. Gov

Substantial volunteering, good leadership
Awards in Spanish, Academic Bowl, President’s Volunteer Service Award

Microcontroller programming internship - ironically more related to engineering that CS

So far I already heard back from College of Natural Sciences, got CS major, and was fortunate enough to get into the Turing Scholars program.

If I have already heard from CNS, do I still get considered for EHP, so that I can perhaps double major?

Could any of you guys chance me for Dean’s while you are at it? :slight_smile:

Thanks for your time!

@CognitioInvictus congrats on Turing! What was your class rank? My understanding is that you can only be admitted to one major as an entering student, but after you complete 30 hours, you can apply to add a second major.

Fairly certain Dean’s is less competitive than Turing (someone check me on that). I’ve applied to both and haven’t heard back from either… which is looking like a bad sign since Turing acceptances seem to have gone out (my rec letter was submitted late though).

@Aristos I would say that they are very comparable- DS is both a Dean’s & Turing.

Both enroll about 45-50 students per year. Turing is obviously for only CS majors(and because CS is difficult to get into at UT may lead one to believe a Turing acceptance is harder), while Dean’s covers all CNS honors. Dean’s is the oldest honors program in CNS- to add more students they added Health Sciences & PolyMath- in that you might begin to argue if they are not as competitive.

@CognitioInvictus - congrats & good luck!

Just FYI, no one who puts engineering as their second choice major would be accepted to engineering.

I’m fairly certain a double major is something you will have to work out with the school after you enroll. They don’t want to take up two spots of the most competitive majors for one student.

Congrats on Turing and CS acceptance! Just something to look into is the BSA computer science degree. It allows a lot more flexibility in your schedule and might pair well with a second major.

@TexasMom2017
My class rank is 3/1449.

Thanks for the info. I’ll see if I can get into EHP sophomore year or the Turing/BHP double honors program.

@Aristos Don’t worry about it. Not all decisions have come out for Turing I think and none of Dean’s have. You also have a chance to get in sophomore year, and freshman year will give you completely clean slate to decorate.
