Engineering Honors

Interesting. I was denied from BME but admitted to ChemE and denied from EHP (got the email today) :stuck_out_tongue:
I’m OOS and had a decent SAT, decent grades, and no incredibly notable EC’s. This whole process is one crazy crapshoot o.o

I was turned away with a 1590 and a rank in the top 4%. I think EHP must consider some other criteria as well.

I was in Engineering Honors years ago, and from what I’ve read, it hasn’t changed much since then. If I had it to do over again, I probably wouldn’t have even bothered. I don’t think I even referred to it on applications or resumes.

1590? Jeeze thats insane that you didnt get it.

Word of Advice: apply for EHP when you apply to Cockrell. It is difficult to get a 3.5+ your first semester if you are taking 15+ hours.

Have most people gotten their EHP emails? I didn’t get one yet…

I havent received word either

For those accepted to ChemE with a BME/Bioengineering and/or pre-Med interest, there a couple of technical area options available:

[Technical Option Areas - Department of Chemical Engineering - Home](http://web.engr.utexas.edu/che/students/undergrad/techoptions.cfm)

AREA 6: BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AND
PREMEDICAL/PREDENTAL PROGRAM
The biomedical option is designed for students who have an
interest in the life sciences in addition to the physical
sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Courses included
under this plan are applicable to the entrance requirements
for most medical schools, dental schools, and graduate
programs in biomedical engineering. For additional
information, see the departmental biomedical advisor.

AREA 7: BIOTECHNOLOGY
The discoveries in the biological sciences that placed large
areas of these sciences on a molecular basis provide great
potential for new products to improve living standards and
health. Those with proper training in the basics of chemical
engineering and in application techniques will make major
contributions to commercial development of such products.

just saying, you probably don’t want to be in EHP, it’s harder, your grades are going to be lower, and it confers no benefits (other than getting honors housing). I encourage all of you to read previous threads concerning the EHP, all of which corroborate what I’m saying.

redhotsrock, it’s actually not harder at all: you take the exact same classes as somebody who isn’t in the Honors program.

I agree that there’s really no benefit to it though lol

Looks good on your resume for something that doesnt require much work

From what I’ve heard, it is harder because the grading is harder and the curves are lower since you’re going to be competing against students who are even more highly motivated than normal engineering students. There really isn’t much of a payoff and compared to the honors designations that Plan II and BHP get, graduating with engineering honors simply isn’t much of a resume boost

One benefit I can think of is the honor scholarships but I don’t know much about that either.

Aren’t there honors classes? When I was in the program, I took honors physics and honors calculus. Physics about killed me. My classmates were all so blasted SMART!

Yeah, there are Honors classes (Like two or three lol?) but nobody I know bothers with taking them. You’re certainly not required to take them. I wouldn’t call that a benefit, since you can be a masochist and ask to get into those classes even if you’re not in Honors.

They actually do offer Engineering scholarships for first-year students who aren’t in Honors, even though I recall them saying somewhere on the site that they don’t.

Just some more data to show you all that this really is a crapshoot:

Accepted Cockrell, Denied EHP.

Not worrying about not making honors, but I’m still curious as to how they choose. Definitely can’t be a gpa/SAT formula though

This is really odd. I only heard from people who have been denied of EHP. There was not a single acceptance so far. Also, almost not a single person mentioned any real benefits. Why does the school keep the program that it has such a hard time making decision on? It would be much easier to declare that every person who is accepted to Cockrell is also accepted to EHP since there is really no difference.:P

Well I’m sure there are some benefits (minimum something that looks good on resume). People are just frustrated for not getting it which they should be because the people who got rejected so far seem pretty stellar to me.

OMG
Have you heard of any acceptance? My D is still waiting to hear from EHP.
Also, do you know of any scholarship given to the admitted?

I’ve heard two acceptances from my school and a lot of rejections. Those rejections included people with very high academic standing. I don’t think the 1500 CR+M rule stands anymore. It could be that the program is being downsized due to budget restrictions? Texas is running a deficit…Honestly, I’m surprised with the number of rejections.
