Engineering Honors

Hey y'all! Has anyone heard back from Engineering honors? I have yet to get a notification. However, one of my friends did get an email that he was accepted so I was just curious..

My son received a letter in the mail yesterday inviting him into the engineering honors program along with some scholarship money. He is very excited!

@alwtexas can you please share your son’s stats? Cheers!

12/545 class rank, 2250 SAT, 34 ACT. 2 sport varsity athlete, good EC’s, essays. Petroleum Engineering

My son also received a letter. We got it today, March 10. The letter was dated March 4 and postmarked March 7, and it invited him to join the Engineering Honors Program and offered him a freshman-year scholarship for $5000. Unfortunately, he formally declined his acceptance to UT Austin on March 6, before we got the letter, because we assumed that no substantial scholarships would be offered (just based on what we had heard about scholarship availability), or that any offered would not be comparable to others he has been offered elsewhere. As it turns out, the $5K offer would not have been enough to make UTA realistically affordable, but very nice to have received the invitation to Honors and the scholly offer. Good luck to all.

Yakker…can you share your son’s stats? I’m trying to figure out the possibilities for my son (jr in HS) as far as honors/scholarships. He’s way up there academically, but I had always heard scholarships at UT, especially in Engineering, are hard to come by.

Sure, rach98n. He’s a National Merit Finalist, 34 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, 22/604 rank, 11 APs by graduation, ECs include volunteer work mentoring/tutoring students, and working with disabled, long history with music, playing cello in school program since 4th grade, cellist for our state symphony program since 5th grade, and consistently in top-tier of All State and All Region orchestra (principal cellist this year), cast member of a teen improv comedy troupe, and two years of baseball in high school. We had heard the same thing as you about scholarships, so we were very surprised he was offered one. He applied for ChemE. The letter we received implied it was the academic record that qualified him for the scholarship and Honors admission; no reference to ECs. Oh, and we are OOS.

I received a letter in the mail today as well. If you wanna know, I also had a 34 ACT, was a National Merit Finalist, am 4/393, and am in the IB diploma program, so I have plenty of IB/AP classes. I applied for chemical engineering as well. Congrats to you guys! Does anybody know if any other scholarships are likely to come out?

My son also received a letter. We got it today, March 10. The letter was dated March 4 and postmarked March 7, and it invited him to join the Engineering Honors Program and offered him a freshman-year scholarship for $1000. Looks like a drop in the bucket, but he loves UT. His SAT 2300 and has 11APs and excellent ECs. Unless a miracle happens on Pi day Tau time, he will be joining the honors program. Good luck to everyone.

My son got his ECE honors confirmation with 12k (48k for 4 years) as scholarship. He already got his Plan II confirmation in NOV 2013 and Engg admission in Dec 2013. Finally honors confirmation came in last week in mail. Mystatus is not updated. Plann 2 meeting on April 3rd. Waiting on other schools to make a final decision.

Hmmm…I know UT is a fantastic school (have one there now), but I’m thinking he would be more likely to get $$ at a smaller school. Stats are good - 33 ACT, not as good on SAT, but retaking. Top 1% of very competitive school. Lots of APs. What other schools are you all considering? He’s interested in Chemical Eng.

Adding to my comments…my son got 35(composite) on ACT and also 6th ranker (out of 547 kids), with 4 years of symphony regional awards and also couple state level math/science awards. He is national merit finalist as well and a GT mentor currently doing research, with a GPA of 3.99/4.0 . He chose to do ECE along with Plan II. we are waiting on couple Ivy’s and Rice. Will know within 2 weeks where he will finally go. UT ECE will be 5th rank in country this year and as a parent I will spend only a max of 12K, since he is awarded 12K scholarship each year.
