I was wondering if engineering applicants are evaluated separately from arts and sciences students. If an engineer decides not to go, will that affect wait list status of someone in arts and sciences?

Admission to the different colleges are done separately. But even if an individual A&S student decides not to go, it won’t necessarily affect the CAS wait list. Every university accepts more students than it has spaces, because no school has an 100% acceptance rate. UVA (and other schools) will wait to see what their acceptance rate looks like after May 1, and then may or may not proceed to the wait list depending.

Dean J has mentioned that there are basically eight different wait lists: IS Arts & Sciences, OOS Arts & Sciences, IS Engineering, OOS Engineering, IS Nursing, OOS Nursing, IS Architecture, and OOS Architecture.

So the short answer to your question is no, the engineering applicant would not affect the A&S applicant.
