I'm kind of new to the whole research opportunities and I was wondering if anyone has advice on how I should search for one and how to prepare for one as well. I'm looking for one that primarily takes place during the summer and at another University.

I'm currently a freshman at Rutgers University, NB and I have already looked at the opportunities here. I just want to know more about other places so I don't have to limit myself.

From the 'google' searches that I have done, most of the colleges only offer programs during the summer for their own students. I was wondering if you guys on CC know any engineering research opportunities at other schools for students who do not necessarily attend that school.

Thank you,
dysfunctional

ps sorry for the long post

Search for engineering REU’s. Here is a sample of Engineering REU’s at Duke where student from all around the country are welcomed.
[REU Programs | Duke Pratt School of Engineering](Undergraduate Research Opportunities | Duke Pratt School of Engineering)

NSF puts out a list. Here is one sorted for Engineering. check for eligibility:
[nsf.gov - REU Sites - US National Science Foundation (NSF)](<a href=“Search Results for REU Sites | NSF - National Science Foundation”>REU Sites | NSF - National Science Foundation)

Search the NSF site referenced by BrownParent for topics that interest you. If you read the award descriptions/ REU web page links you can see what kind of students the programs are looking for.

All of the NSF funded programs encourage applications from women, URMs, and kids from from schools where the opportunities for undergraduate research may be limited. Some will specify they want rising Juniors /Seniors, but there are some that will accept students after their freshman year.

Most programs look to assemble a mix of students with diverse backgrounds and experiences. My son, an Aerospace major at a large school, did an REU in MechE and one of the participants was a white male who had completed one year of community college.
