I want to get an Engineering internship in the summer in NYC, having something to do with aeronautical parts or robotics. (Sorry, I'm only a freshman and don't have much experience; this is more of a way of finding out what I want to do). However, I go to school in the midwest so I'm looking for places online to search for such internships.

Does anyone know of any good websites to do this?

I will be going back to NY in about a month so I can do any potential interviews or whatever. Any general tips about getting an intership are also welcome.
Thanks!

Cold-calling isn't all that effective. Cold-calling a hundred different firms... a little more effective.

I sent out my resume to every company that looked remotely interesting that I ran across. Keep a running list in a file on your computer desktop of companies that you run across... You can find companies in the locations that you'd like to work by looking through the newsletters or on the websites of local professional societies. When I was looking for an internship in Houston, for example, I checked the ASCE Houston Chapter newsletters and any company referred to within, I sent a resume and cover letter to.

As a freshman, it's going to be tougher to find an internship... Most people want to hire juniors and seniors. Still, if you shoot at anything that moves, your chances go up. Good luck!

You can't really afford to be too picky but the internships are out there. Go to any career fairs your school has, get on every listserv your adviser has about job/internships, cold-call/email (the / means do both) every company you see that you might be interested in.

Here's a tip, government places need interns a lot of the time. The DOH or whomever. Call/email all of them. Remember, this first internship isn't really about doing something you like or are interested in. It's about getting experience so next year you can actually do something you like. If you get something you like this time, awesome. If not, don't work at a "regular" summer job just because it pays better or is more convenient, YOU WANT TO HAVE EXPERIENCE.

IMO, discussing possible jobs with professors at your school could also be helpful. You could even volunteer without pay.
It is very respectable that you are trying to find what you really want to do this early... but internships can wait.
The good thing about professors is that they know what's going on and they have connections. Perhaps these connections and LORs will give you a stronger chance to intern where ever you want in the future... (Cause in the long run, un-related internships are quite useless).
You seem to be extremely devoted for a Freshman, hence I would think professors would love to have you around working for them. This will also let you do research that truly interests you later on.

Look for jobs under professors

Stack relations, get to know what other professors are also doing

Stick to research that interests you

You'll have better LORs and connections compared to other students

Intern where ever you feel that can contribute towards your field of interest.

Apply for engineering jobs, MS, PhD, Med school, or Ibanking, etc.etc.etc.
7-infinity. Help the world become a better place + earn tons of money : )
