I'm a freshman chemical engineering major and I want to study abroad (probably in Spain), but I feel like it would be pretty hard to fit into my schedule. I came in with some AP credit but it basically just let me skip one course. So would I just have to go during the summer or something? I really don't want to because it doesn't seem like it would be as significant of an experience.
Also, when engineering majors go abroad (how often do they?), do they normally take classes for their major? I'm not sure what I would take because I already know Spanish...I have heard from some international students that years abroad are kinda considered blow-off years, is this true?

I would like to know more about this for my D. She is a CS major and would like to go to Spain a year from now. She is also pursuing a Spanish minor. Does she take only Spanish classes? Shouldn’t she keep up some kind of study in CS? Would those classes be in Spanish? Her SA office is giving her pretty vague answers so far. So, I thought I’d ask here. Thanks.
