Like many CCers I think, I hoping to go to med school, but I don't really know the US process

I'm looking to major in BIOMED at Columbia, so does Columbia's biomed program facilitate entry into med school? Is it really challenging to balance both set of requisites?

For biomed programs in general--is Columbia SEAS a good choice?

Major in whatever you think you would do best in. US medical schools don't care about the major as long as you take the premed requirements and do well on the MCAT.

I don't think any major facilitates entry into medical school.

What about GPA? Don’t engineering majors usually have lower GPAs because of more difficult/stringent classes and requirements compared to, say, a biology major or econ major?

GPA is important, but the admissions committee will usually consider strength of the UG institution and difficulty of curriculum. A lower GPA in a rigorous major should be balanced by stronger performance on MCAT.

The admission committees usually will consider far more factors than just a number in the GPA slot. Now if you have a lower GPA, lower performance relative to your peers, mediocre MCAT, and iffy LOR then you aren’t get a break regardless of your major or UG University.

You may want to review post #23 by EngH. Pre-meds with engineering majors may have a hard time to accommodate MCAT, EC’s and REU’s while maintaining good GPA’s. It is likely that a gap year may be needed.
