Engineering Major Help

I want to be involved in space with companies such as NASA or SpaceX. Problem is I can't decide how. I was set on being an Aerospace engineer, but started reading somewhere that AE's don't do much R&D (at least the research part) which is really what I would be interested in. So I started to consider an Engineering Physics/Applied physics degree, but I don't know since not as many of my choice colleges offer them. Which major should I pick?

What are your choice colleges?

Well, my first used to be UCLA, but it doesn’t offer both; Right now I’m looking at UCB, UCSD, Cornell, Stanford, U of Michigan… that’s all I can remember atm.

Here’s the deal: I really want to be recognized for something. Which major could possibly get me into a ground-breaking research divisions that could gain me notoriety?

Whoever told you that is a fool. What are of space research are you most interested in?

I guess it would be getting somewhere; researching more efficient methods, paths, engines, fuels, materials, spacecraft, etc. I’m really interested in SpaceX for their dedication to get to Mars by 2025.

But I would make all the difference, right? Physics = methods, ideas to get there, paths; engineering = engines, rockets, fuels to get there.

No. When you get to research, the line between physics and engineering is incredibly blurry. Engineering, on average, will be more applied but that is far from always being the case. Aerospace engineers have the potential to do plenty of space travel research ranging from the purely applied to the purely theoretical.

You should also realize that science is a highly collaborative endeavor, and the ability to work as part of a team is essential.

True; I didn’t essentially mean individually recognized, just recognized for some achievement with a group or company. Something that when my kids look back, I can say “I helped design the — on that craft so it could go” or “We were the first to create think of that back in my day.”
