I've heard that you need to know calculus and etc for engineering. For senior year i'm going to take avd alg2/trig would it be okay even if my math class didnt go up to precalc or calc ?

Does your school offer precalculus or calculus?

Are you sure you really want to do engineering because you are gonna have to compete with people like me that took Algebra 2 as a freshman.

I imagine that if you were to pursue Engineering, you’d be bogged down your Freshman and Sophomore year with prerequisite math classes like Pre-Calculus and Introductory Calculus I.

If it is something you want to do, then just do it; don’t worry about competing against anybody. Someone who took Alg 2 as a freshman isn’t automatically better at life for it, learning math is very much like a language, the more you practice, the better you get at it.

What @preamble1776 said is true, you cannot just pretend like you took those classes. You will eventually have to take them, sooner rather than later, unfortunately.

@rmjmdr97 yes they do, I am good at math i always got an A in math and i was wondering if i could skip math because i still have time to change it.

@dsi411 I really want to be an engineer and i don’t really see any other major that i would like. I know it might be a longshot but i really want to try.

Well I guess you don’t really have any other option. Since you are really good at math I guess it’s not much of a problem. What type of college are you planning to go to? Also maybe you could do precalculus or calculus over the summer, but I don’t know if that’ll help in any way. Perhaps you could talk to your school counselor.

@dsi411 I wish i could but Its not possible for me to do it over the summer and college ive been looking more at Uc then Cal states so i should look more into cal states if i want to be realistic because with a gpa of 3.4 i probably wont get into a UC

You’ll be fine, although you’ll have to take precal in college. You shouldn’t and wouldn’t be able to test out of it/skip it. Whats your ACT math score?

Does your school have Naviance? With that you can look up colleges and see how likely it is for you to get in based on history of other people from your school getting in and you gpa and test scores. I think you should look at that to help you better decide what colleges would take you. I’m from California too by the way.

@dsi411 i don’t think my school has that but i have a college board account i dunno if its much help. Do you think with my 3.4 and math lvl i would be able to get into cal poly pomona or cal poly slo ?

@Patton370 i haven’t taken my act yet i am still thinking about whether i should take it or not. Do you think i should take it ?

Cal Poly Pomona you could have a chance. Cal Poly SLO is a reach. If you look at the STATs for this year, if you do not have at least a 4.0+ and an SAT of 2100+ or ACT 31+ for engineering, you are out of luck. There were applicants that were rejected by SLO but got accepted to Berkley. Extremely competitive this year.

@Gumbymom do you have any other schools you can suggest to me ?

I think most engineering programs are set up expecting you either to have completed calculus or to take calculus as a freshman. Look at the requirements of the schools you are interested in, and see if you can find the freshman required classes for engineers. All the ones I have seen say calculus. I think if you are serious about engineering, you’ll need to take a summer school math class so that you can complete precalculus. Talk to your counselor. Also, if you are good at math, why were you placed in alg2/trig for senior year? If your math skills aren’t strong, you will probably have trouble in engineering.

@BubblyBear, I will give you my sons STATS for this years admission for Computer Science and tell you where he applied and got accepted and rejected to give you an idea of some schools you may consider . Son taking AP Calculus BC this year.
CSU GPA: 3.73
ACT: 31
10 AP classes end of Senior Year and 2 Honors
Accepted: SDSU,SJSU,CSUF, CSULB, UCR, CPP
Denied: SLO, UCSB, UCD, UCI
I would suggest CSULB, CS Fullerton, CPP, UCR, UCM, UCSC as Match/Low Reach
Safety: CS Channel Islands, San Marcos
For the UC’s, GPA was weighted heavily vs. test scores, so GPA’s of 4.0+ was needed for most of the engineering majors.

Yes you need to take the ACT, I’d recommend taking it as soon as possible (I’m assuming your a junior)

@mathyone I think i am able to change to precalc since my counsler was thinking about putting me straight into calculus because she thought i was going to take ap physics. But i have heard that you shouldn’t skip trig bc you need it in precalc and calc ?

@Gumbymom Thank you, it’s very helpful
