Engineering majors and Frats?

My son is majoring in Environmental Engineering. As you know his classes are no picnic. Have any you engineering majors also joined a frat?

With calculus, and chemistry and the rest of the classes that you have to take as an engineering student. I was curious to see what your opinion was.

thanks in advance.

lots of engineering students join frats without issue.

Um… It’s possible but his grades will fall unless he is in remedial classes (like calc 1 but he should be in calc 2 and already knows the material). Or. if it’s one of the engineering frats. those are great because they give you the taste of greek like but are accommadating for engineers)

ufgator are you joining the eng frat? do you know if they have a house? I think they were building one, but dont know if they ever got around to it.

Here is a link to this fraternity
[Theta Tau - Zeta Gamma Chapter - University of Florida](Theta Tau Zeta Gamma Chapter)

My S rushed last fall 2010, got bids from 3 fraternities, but decided not to pledge with his Mech/Aero Engineering double major. He really liked the houses, but didn’t think he had the time to devote to his classes and to be so committed time-wise to the fraternity. He ended up with all A’s and 1 B for his first year at UF; I think if he would have pledged, his grades would have suffered alot and he would have felt overwhelmed. Remember that rush is fall or spring—any time your S feels is right. I think fraternity life is great—I just wonder if it is doable if you want to get great grades in Engineering and join other on campus groups like Gator Motors–that require a commitment of hours.

He has decided to wait and see if he rushes next semester.

What can anyone tell me about the eng fraternity?

Well I would have wanted to rush for the engineering fraternity but they require a 2.0 UF GPA, so no first-semester freshmen are allowed.

@jaredk. yeah… that sucks. Hope you have a successful bid in the spring!!

Also, for any girls reading, Phi Sigma Rho is a WONDERFUL sorority to rush for as well.
