Engineering majors taking Calculus I

Wanted to get some feedback from some freshman engineering majors that AP’d out of Calc I and went straight into Calc II. Once you got into Calc II, did you feel like you should have gone into Calc I first, ie, you’re lost, too far behind? What about those who did take Calc I, even though they got the AP credit, either because they didn’t feel comfortable about their math background or they wanted to not jump in too quick?

Nope, I felt just fine jumping into Cal II. AP Calc AB covers the same thing that Cal I here does. AP Calc BC covers Cal I and Cal II. I normally would recommend freshman take courses in subjects they are very comfortable with to get used to the pace of learning in a college courses, which no AP course can truly replicate in my opinion. However, math is one of the exceptions because the material and pace of learning hardly changes from high school to college. The only real difference is the lack of busy work to prop up grades in college courses.

Montegut, we had the same question. At first, D2 only needed to get Cal I out of the way, but then decided to minor in math with CBHP as well. So now I’m wondering if it’s such a good idea to try the jump to Cal II. It’s hard to judge her AP Cal class in terms of how good a match it would be to the Bama class. I know D1 took honors Cal I and had no trouble and loved her teacher, but I don’t know how she would have faired in Cal II. Can others chime in here? Thanks.

Frankly, both my boys have said that Cal II doesn’t really use any Cal I info. Both had no trouble skipping Cal I, and going right to Cal II.

A student in AP Cal, can always register for Cal II at Bama Bound, and then after seeing his exam score, can decide to drop down if necessary or just desired. :)
