Engineering @ MIT, Cornell, Stanford, Berkeley, UMich

INTRO:
I was contemplating for a long time whether or not to make a "What are my chances" thread because I can bet that most of the replies that I'll receive will be the generic "write steller essays," "get good recs," or "you have __% chance of getting in," which doesn't help. But now that I've been on this forum for quite a while, I believe that making one "chances" thread is an experience that every faithful CCer should experience.

ANY comments will be appreciated, though there really isn't much I can change, except perhaps somethings about the essays (still coming)

So here goes:

I'm a Korean American male. Born in California, moved to Indiana when I was 1. Moved to Korea when I was in 2nd grade, moved again in Korea in 4th grade, moved to Indiana again in 6th grade, moved to Wisconsin in 9th grade.
School: A Milwaukee surburban school of about 1300 people. One of top 5 public schools in WI (I'm guessing).
I'm interested in going into Engineering, but I'm not sure about the specific major.

I will definitely revise the resume before I attach it to the apps.
Things to note: I've steadily risen in the level of English class. I've exhausted the math curriculum in my school. I'm doing a research project/competing in the intel science fair this year (fingers crossed). Also, I've built a R/C plane for the purpose of taking Aerial Photography--my big hobby. I'll include this as a supplement (w/ pictures, description of the craft, etc) I'm also thinking about sending a recording of a clarinet solo piece.

EA to: MIT
RD to: Cornell, Stanford, Berkeley, UMich, UIUC (maybe), Wisconsin-Madison (safety)

Many thanks!

Where is your GPA?

I think (judging from your class rank, work load, ECs, test scores, etc) that Michigan is a safety for you. It also has a top 5 engineering program in the country.

our GPA system is messed up (more like eccentric), so I'll spare you the detail...(max UW is 4.68; max W is 5.86 or something like that. Very different--cause of many debate/discussions in our school)

I think you have a good chance at MIT, but it's really hard to say if you'll get in for sure.

Cornell is a match for you, along with UMich, Wisconsin-Madison, and UIUC.

The main question is Berkeley and Stanford. Because you're out of state, and UCB engineering is extremely competitive, it will be pretty tough for you to get in. Stanford is known to be hard to predict...especially now because Yale's ex-director of admission will be at Stanford this year.

Even with OOS, Berkeley is still easier to get in than MIT/Stanford because this person has very high stats (34 ACT, virtually perfect SAT IIs, good class rank and GPA) and Berkeley's admission is more about numbers. MIT/Stanford are indeed hard to predict . You have fighting chance for every school in America. Just apply and do your best with the applications.

Yeah that is true, I guess. Only 9% OOS get into UCB though.

UIUC is very good for engineering. You have a good chance for everywhere else, but if you don't get into MIT or Stanford, I would suggest UIUC.

That's not true. The Berkeley's OOS admit rate is about 21%. Look it up; it's on their website.

That's correct Sam Lee. 9% is the number of OOS applicants who apply to Cal who end up enrolling. But 21% is still pretty low. The mean SAT score for OOS students at Cal is over 1400!

Thanks for all the replies!

I was actually thinking of dropping UIUC as a college to apply to.. but I guess I'll keep it on the list.

Thanks again!

omg dude! your stats are SOOOOOOOOO close to mine!

good luck dude! i hope you get in!

Cornell Engineering is a match...haha thats reallly funny..what moron wrote that

danielsjang:

UCB: Slight Reach (Engineering, out of state)

damn, nice job

I applied to MIT EA... you probably kicked my ass

People on this forum tend to exaggerate the whole OOS factor. With credentials like this, you don't need to worry about being OOS. All colleges want good students, regardless of where they're from.
