I was wondering what is the job outlook for engineers? More specifically what is the job outlook for Computer and Software engineers? I'm currently a junior in high school and was thinking about what majors to pursue later on in college. My father, who is a computer engineer, and many of my cousins, who are also computer engineers, say that the job outlook for engineers is small, at least in America. They say many engineering jobs are "offshored" to other countries such as India, China, and Japan because they provide cheaper labor which leaves little engineering jobs in America. They also say that there is a higher chance of getting layed-off because of the recently declining economy. Is it worth pursuing a career in computer or software engineering or is it better for me to follow a different career path such as to be become a doctor or lawyer of some sort?

In this economy, everyone is suffering. Many law firms are barely hiring and many that are hired have been put on hold for a year or more. I would not assume that the law profession is immune from the economic issues that exist today. As far as medicine/doctors, I suppose that depends on the state of current health care bills that are up for passage in Congress. It is quite possible that the level of economic income that doctors generate may be drastically reduced by the bills that may pass, while on the other hand, there may indeed may not be enough doctors to take care of the mandatory insured that could occur with the passage of these bills. My advice would be to go with what you are passionate about-if it is engineering, then you will be successful. It is very difficult to predict just what the economy may do in the next few years–your passion will carry you a long way!

Meehhhh.

It’s impossible to predict exactly what the job market will be like in 2017. The BLS OOH seems to try, but even then I see some dishearteningly unacceptable changes between the latest one and the one from a couple years ago.

Go with what you like.

Doctors are always a good job to take. You will be able to find a job after med school and there is a very low chance that you will be laid off. The downside is that I think it is much more harder to get into med school and survive than it is to survive engineering.
