Engineering-Penn State, Texas A&M, Alaska, Kansas, Colorado School of Mines

I was wondering what my chances are for these schools in regards to their petroleum engineering program. My stats are as follows:

-U/W GPA: 3.85
-W GPA: 4.09
-Class Rank: 4 out of 222
-SAT Score: 1270
Math:540 (I know, low; retaking in November)
Reading and Writing: 730
-9 APs taken by the end of the year: Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, Stats, US History, Human Geography, Comparative Government, and English 11 and 12.

Extra Curriculars:
-100+ hospital volunteer hours
-Spirit Club
-Honors Society
-FHLA
-Robotics Optimist Club (secretary)
-50+ community service hours

AP Physics was terminated this year, the year I planned to take it. I have taken Engineering and two years of Conceptual Physics however. I can get two strong letters of recommendation from science teachers too. Sorry for the long post and thank you for your input!

Texas a&m will be tough with your sat. Their petroleum program is one of the best in the country. If I’m correct, you should apply as soon as possible for them because they have some sort of first come first serve methodology in the engineering department. Work on that sat and try to get it to atleast a 1350.

Kansas you should be fine

Colorado school of mines, from what I’ve heard, is pretty tough. I would put it as a reach.

Penn state is on a similar level as a&m

Not sure about Alaska.

All in all, get that sat up. Which state are you from btw? I think a 1400 would get you above average at all of those schools, but your gpa will help a lot.

Thanks for your advice! I’m from Idaho, pretty far from most of these schools. Regarding the first come, first serve at A&M: do you think late November would be too late to submit an application? The November SAT is the 5th and scores are received the 22 of that month.

Can you afford the OOS tuition at the schools on your list? Your math score needs a major boost to make it through engineering.

Straight from A&M Admissions: “Freshmen are admitted to the university first, and then placed in a major on a first come, first served basis.”

A nice thing about A&M is if you can get at least a 1k scholarship from the school, they will give you in state tuition.

Could anyone share some info on timing? Personally I would send in everything besides for scores as soon as possible so that you’re higher up in the pile of the almost 35k applicants. I know you can send in test scores and transcripts later than the rest of your application.

Idaho is tough… the best school I can think of over there is BYU. I know there are tuition exchange programs of a sort that will let you get instate at neighboring states that offer a major your state doesn’t

Make sure you apply by Penn State’s priority deadline of Nov. 30th. That SAT retake might cut it close?

Yeah it really will! I’m now planning to submit the application a week or so before the scores come in so they’ll have my application at least. I hope submitting it in close won’t affect my chances of getting in.

@a.v.16 Hey, coincidentally, you’re just like me, however with some minor differences.
I’ve applied to Stanford, UT Austin, Penn State, Texas A&M, Colorado School of Mines, University of Tulsa, and Texas Tech on the major petroleum engineering by Late September 2016. I’ve already been accepted to most of the unis including PSU and CSM with no rejection so far. Stanford’s, UT’s and A&M’s decisions are still pending, though.
I’ve taken both O level and AS level abroad with GPA 4.0 (unw) and 4.3 (w). Basically, all As however, my SAT (old) was 1790 (which is 1280 on the new one). My essays and ecas were, in my opinion, excellent.
Good luck to you, and please do let me know the decisions you receive.

@Jpgranier They have increased the scholarship amount from 1k to 4k to qualify for in-state tuition for some reasons. I am an international student and was hoping to go there. I have already been accepted but they have not sent the scholarship offers yet.

@Jericho_19 tell us your stats

@sean191297 I had 1340 SAT score and 3 A- level As

There was a poster here just the other day looking who had not been able to find internships or a job upon graduating with a PetE degree. I would look into sonething less specialized, but ChemE is one if the most difficult E majors.
