I've heard that engineers tend to be libertarians (social liberal, economic conservtive). To what extent is this true, and how does it affect the workplace? Thanks.

I’ve worked as an engineer for 30 years and have yet to meet one who self identifies as a libertarian. Mostly, the younger ones are Democrats, then as they get older and can “afford it”, they start to lean Republican.

Which is basically like everyone else.

my impression is that most young professionals lean libertarian whether they know it or not, including engineers. particularly the socially liberal part of the equation

^ My impression is that most young professionals in Seattle lean heavily liberal.

Somebody from Texas A&M very likely might have the impression that most young professionals lean heavily conservative.

Depends on your perspective I suppose.

I don’t think alot of young professionals even know what a libertarian is. A few of my friends didn’t know what a libertarian is until I had to explain it to them since I’m a libertarian

Explain to us what a libertarian is

see the first post

A Libertarian is conservative on things like government control, spending, and taxes. They are usually liberal on social issues like abortion, gay rights, and things like that. Except they tend to be conservative on gun rights, so they aren’t liberal on all social issues.

I’m not sure if most engineers are libertarians. My guess is that engineers tend to be more conservative than the average person (at least fiscally) since they make more money and are logical thinkers. No offense to any liberals :)

I’m pretty sure I read some study/poll that said engineers tend to be more conservative. From my experiences I’ve seen engineers of all political persuasions both in the work place and at school, but as a whole there is definitely a bit of a right leaning stance.

“Except they tend to be conservative on gun rights”

What exactly does that mean??? I can tell you that most (real) libertarians are very pro-gun rights, but I can’t tell if that’s what you were saying or not.

Let’s seperate this out… EE vs. IE vs. MechE vs. ChemE and so on…

Conservatives are very pro-gun rights, so I was saying that libertarians are also. Most liberals like gun control laws.
