Engineering Premed

I have decided to go to Johns Hopkins. I am not sure of my major yet. I definitely want to do something with engineering, but I also want to leave the option of Pre-med open. I was thinking about Chemical and Biomolecular engineering since it is in demand and I can easily find a job after getting a Masters. However, I have not taking AP Chem in high school (only AP Bio and AP Physics C Mechanics & E&M). Will I have some catching up to do? Would you recommend Chemical and Biomolecular engineering as a major for possible premed?... or is it best to enter as an undecided engineering major?

ChemBE is a great program at Hopkins and it does definitely give you the option of deciding to go to medical school. You’re in pretty good shape coming in having take AP Physics C and AP Biology. You’ll place out of freshman physics and the intro biology courses; not having taken AP Chem is not a problem at all - the basic course plan assumes you’re coming in with no AP credit and still finishing in four years. You’ll still have to take a year of biology since a higher level biology sequence is recommended/required for medical school. The ChemBE majors covers almost all of the pre-med requirements (except Organic Chemistry II, Orgo Lab and Cell Bio Lab).

As for your final question - there’s no advantage that I see of entering as undecided engineering if you know what you’re interested in studying. By coming in as a ChemBE major, you’ll take an intro ChemBE class that gives an introduction to the field.

Sounds great, thank you!
