How does Bowdoin’s engineering program work? I’ve read that they send you off to another institution to study since they do not have engineering. I’m interested in ME and EE but I like Bowdoin a lot. I’m limited in transportation so I can’t go across the country looking at colleges.

I am also interested in learning more about bowdoin’s program

Hey nathaniel93,

I just looked it up a couple days ago. There are 2 options.

3-2 Program:
Spend 3 years at Bowdoin, then 2 years at another university (UMaine, Dartmouth, Caltech, Columbia)

or

4-2 Program:
Spend 4 years at Bowdoin (to complete senior year) and 2 years at another university (same choices above)

There are a number of courses you must take at Bowdoin which you can read here. [Engineering Programs (Bowdoin, Physics and Astronomy)](http://www.bowdoin.edu/physics/engineering/index.shtml)

The result of doing the 3-2 or 4-2 program is a bachelor of arts degree and bachelor of science in engineering degree.

Can anyone explain why someone who was interested in engineering would want to take this option? Several excellent liberal arts colleges (like Bowdoin) are offering this path now. My question is with the number of excellent engineering schools that have a four year programs why would someone want to take what I see as a major detour and to go to Bowdoin before the final destination? I have no axe to grind with Bowdoin (it is indeed an excellent libral arts college, no doubt about it) just a curious old engineer, thats all.

-money issues
-not sure about becoming an engineer
-legacy
-like the school/area

I know someone who got into MIT but went to Bowdoin instead because they couldn’t afford the tuition.

Thanks for the info. Wow I had no idea that Bowdoin was a great deal compared to a school like MIT.

Well it’s either going to MIT and having your parents die in the streets or go to Bowdoin and everything is normal.
