You need to do a little more research on your own, perhaps. There is NO engineering at the Univ. of Chicago. They do offer a computer science major, but it is housed within the math department. Very theoretical. However, reps from the dept assured my son that research opportunities were available for those who searched them out. Univ. of Chicago is a great school, but you won't be taking any engineering classes.

Of those schools, Cornell probably has the best reputation in Silicon Valley. The most highly regarded schools in Silicon Valley are probably MIT, CMU, Stanford, Berkeley, CalTech, Harvey Mudd, but there are lots of other schools represented and recruited from, including Cornell, UT, UI-UC, Rice, Claremont-McKenna, UCLA, UC Davis, etc. When I was working in R&D, I had coworkers from Univ of Missouri-Rolla, BYU, and GeorgiaTech among others.

The Cornell program is called ECE, Electrical and Computer Engineering. Very labor intensive, problem oriented, endless problem sets, numerous group projects. Many are International students or Asian-Amer. With the exception of a couple of uninspired professors, the teaching is excellent, all done by profs, with TAs grading problem sets and doing the hands-on supervision of projects. Faculty are readily available for help. Must be a self-starter, no hand-holding. Faculty are friendly but busy. Great facilities and resources. ECE major and Comp Sci minor is a nice combo but a killer.

Cornell is awesome for ECE and Comp Sci. You've heard of "work ethic"? They teach that, too. I was able to get a TA for 4 years and a RA for 3 years and did two summer internships one at NASA and one at Arecibo.
