My DD was planning to apply to Lafayette because they have a dual major in Engineering and International Studies. She is thinking she wants to do Environmental Engineering and do something with water treatment (she said she doesn't want to build bridges.) Lafayette only has a minor in Environmental Engineering. Yesterday she told me Lehigh has an Environmental Engineering major and asked me what I thought. I told her that they are both good schools and that Lafayette would have a more liberal arts bent whereas Lehigh would be more business oriented in addition to engineering. Any other insights?

My neighbor is a very successful environmental engineer who works for a European company from his home here in upstate NYS. He went to Lafayette College about 25 years ago, and I’m not sure if the minor was even offered at the time. Lehigh has a business school, whereas Lafayette offers degrees in Economics, International Economics and Commerce and Economics – Mathematics. Both schools have good placement rates for graduates. Lafayette does permit students to create their own interdisciplinary major, I don’t know if this option is available at Lehigh.

I wouldn’t call a concentration in environmental engineering interdisplinary. Civil Engineering majors at Lafayette are required to take certian core courses for the major, then they are free to specialize in an ‘area of study’ by taking technical electives in that area, environmental engineering being one of them. From the college’s website:

You may want to look at the specific courses (required and available) in the major.

LC82 – I don’t believe anyone said anything about environmental engineering being an interdisciplinary major. The OP had asked a question about the differences between Lafayette and Lehigh and I had offered the interdisciplinary major as being one of the POSSIBLE differences. Otherwise, you advice is good.

Thanks hv51 and LC82, both responses were indeed helpful.

@hv51: My mistake, I misinterpreted your last statement.

@OP: You probably have already seen this, but here is the link to info on LC’s dual major in Engineering and International Studies: [Division of Engineering: International Studies & Engineering](http://engineering.lafayette.edu/international-studies-engineering/international-studies-engineering-2-2/)
