Engineering research university

I am planning on majoring in mechanical engineering, areas of specified interest within the field are aerospace engineering, industrial design, material science, applied mathematics, and most of all acoustics. My question is, what are the colleges, if any, that are especially recognized for undergraduate research in the mechanical engineering field and/or any of the specified fields listed above? I know many colleges have outstanding graduate programs, but it seems harder to find undergraduate research universities. please help?

Generally, if a university has a good graduate program it will have a good undergraduate research program since most undergraduate research is in support of grad students.

That is what i thought made sense to me. But some of my friends/councilors/parents argue that larger and/or more prestigious schools are more focused on their graduates. I am mostly worried about being nothing but a number. I am also aware that a lot of the opportunity available is based on inquiry of the student, no matter where you go.

True, they are more focused on graduate students in a sense, but there is also a lot more research going on. Some smaller schools are great for research, but not all and definitely not the majority.

thanks all you guys for the info! so if i am clear, the assumption can be made that a university with a good reputation for graduate research will also likely have many opportunities for undergrads?
