Engineering: SBU vs UB vs Bing

Hey CC,

I've been accepted to these three schools for the Fall 2013 semester as a Aerospace Engineering (Buffalo), or Mechanical (Stony, Bing) major. I've been having a hard time deciding which school to attend. I want to go to a school with a strong reputation for engineering that will provide me with research opportunities and will allow me to get into a top grad school like UMich, UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA etc. while also providing a strong social atmosphere with much to do. I would like to major in Aerospace but considering Buffalo is the only school to offer it I've included the others on my list. At Buffalo I would most likely be doing a double major in MechE and AeroE. Stony and Buffalo have both offered me $2.5k/yr in scholarships. I'm from Long Island and it would be nice to get away and have a change of scenery, but part of me feels that Stony has been on the rise lately and may become the premier SUNY University in the future. So which school has the best program? The best quality of life? and the most opportunities?

I would say Buffalo is a good choice. UB has a highly rated engineering program and the money is good too. It’s a large campus and their are actually 3 campuses (North Campus in Amherst, South Campus at the north end of the city of Buffalo and Downtown Campus in the city’s medical corridor). Downtown is exclusively for grad students in the health field. North Campus in Amherst, about 15 minutes north of the city, is where engineering is headquartered and they just opened some new facilities there. The South Campus has mostly Math facilities and the school of architecture so you may have some classes there but there is a campus shuttle between campuses. Despite what people may say, Buffalo is a very cool town. It is a lot colder than on Long Island but we have great art galleries, a big theatre scene, and a lot of cool neighborhoods in the city (Allentown, the Elmwood Village, etc). UB’s north campus has kind of a “cold” feel to it due to the large number of commuters but there are still more commuters at Stony Brook. In my opinion, I would say that Binghamton and Buffalo are the 2 SUNY’s on the rise. Plus, you certainly wouldn’t be the only Long Island student at UB.
