We have a friend whose son has received the scholarship for engineering. He has been offered tuition + some additional $. The question is…what happens to that scholarship should he decide to switch majors? His ACT score puts him just below the presidential scholarship. Thanks!

If he is no longer engineering, he would lose the additional money offered by the engineering dept. For example, if he has a 30 and at least a 3.5, he received the UA Scholar, which is 2/3 tuition. COE gives him an additional 1/3 tuition plus $2500 annually. Should he no longer be engineering, he’d lose the 1/3 and the $2500.

Thanks. That’s what we assumed.

Class2012 is right…this is what is says on the eng’g scholarship page:

*Students must maintain enrollment in a College of Engineering degree program to receive any College of Engineering scholarship.

*

Not surprising. The CoE isn’t going to continue providing merit for a student who’s no longer in the CoE.

Of course, we were just not sure if he would get the 2/3 tuition award if he switched majors.

The 2/3 tuition is from the univ and it’s for stats. The UA Scholar award is not dependent upon one’s major.

Keep in mind that the student is NOT awarded the Presidential when he has a 30/31 and is in engineering. No…he still has the UA Scholar…regardless. But if he’s in engineering, then the gets an additional 1/3 plus 2500 per year. But, the student doesn’t have the Presidential…he still has the UA Scholar.

University-awarded Merit scholarship recipients change their majors all the time. No penalty for that.
