However, it isn't clear to me exactly how these scholarships work. The engineering website isn't very clear. I only saw one example of a winner in that other thread, so it's difficult to self-chance.

Would the following stats be competitive?

SAT: 2320 (800-770-750), not superscored
GPA: 3.97 UW, 4.23 W
Rank: 6/393
ECs: Good but not fabulous; some state-level awards
Recs: Very good
Race: White

I haven't hit submit yet, so I might be too late anyway. If that's the case, just say so.

noimagination - your stats are good enough for a scholarship but because of competition within the engineering field, you can never be certain that you’ll get one.

That said, there are some applications for scholarships out there available on

that you may be eligible for. I would suggest applying to that and more.

To answer your questions though, the engineering scholarship of honor is a scholarship that is offered to a student by the college of engineering. For incoming students, they typically don’t apply for the scholarship. They are typically funded by donors both corporate and individual.

^ I don’t think I fit the requirements for the named scholarships on that page (the Geisinger lists pretty much every state but Alaska ;)). I guess we’ll see about the automatic awards.

Thanks for the information. I’ll reach a final decision by tonight.

Can you receive Engineering Scholarships of Honor if you were offered a chance at another Michigan Alumni scholarship? I was invited to apply for some Michigan Alumni scholarship, but I looked on the page and only 30 people got it last year, so I doubt I’ll get it. My stats are similarly competitive to the OP so I was really looking for an Engineering scholarship, should I decline applying for the Alumni scholarship then?

noimagination:
My S received Engineering Scholarship of Honor today. I believe it is for $8K/yr for 4 years. You should be receiving it, if not already.

GPA 3.96/4 (UW), ACT 36, SAT 2290, SAT II Math, Phy, Chem - 800, 800, 790, NMSF, 5s in AP Chem, Phy (B), Econ, Math II, 2 major ECs (Robotics & Community Service), Science/Chem Olympiad, Water Polo JV, NIH Summer Research Internship. School does not rank, In-state.

My S also received notification today, and he’s pretty excited. Stats: GPA 4.06 - school only offers 3 APs: Gov, Calc AB, and Eng (5’s) but self-studied for Bio and Chem (4’s), AP Scholar w/Honor, ACT 36, SAT IIs Math, Chem 800, 760, SAT 2190, NMSF (and I now believe he’s a finalist), Brain Busters, Quiz Bowl, HS Cross Country, Youth Group Mission Trips, Attended UM’s SCEEP last summer (Engineering Camp), which could not have hurt, and he’s has perfect attendance since the start of middle school.

Yes, it’s $8,000/year renewable for 4 years. I’m guessing this can be combined with the Regents $1500 for freshman year?

I’m curious - do you remember when your son heard a response from the sceep program. My daughter applied and they haven’t notified her yet. They haven’t responded to my phone call and no where can I find a date that they will be notifying applicants.
