Engineering Scholarships of Honor

Let me first say that I ****ing hate chance threads. Why not just look at the decisions threads to get an idea of how you stand? This is the first chance thread I will post, because I have looked and cannot find the quality of applicants who receive merit scholarships for the College of Engineering (called what the title of this thread). So here goes, what is my chance at an engineering scholarship, and how much could I be in the running for?

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2160 (M 740, CR 740, W 680)
[] ACT: 34 (M 36, E 34, R 30, S 36)
[] SAT II: 800 Chemistry, 790 Math II
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.8
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 5%, at least
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5's (Biology, Calc AB, Chem, Micro, Macro, Stat)
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Honors USNCO
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): JETS TEAMS (Captain)
Math Team (Captain)
School Newspaper (Staff Writer)
Chemistry Club

[] Volunteer/Community service: Emphasis on Tutoring, 100+ hours
[] Summer Activities: Summer School Tutoring Center Manager, English Language teacher in foreign country, and of course CHILLAXING

[/ul]Other[list]
[] Intended major?: MSE
[] State::CT
[] School Type: Public
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 120-130k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nah :(

Considering OOS and not steller grades, I wouldn’t expect any.

Honors USNCO? Were you invited to camp? Or just qualified for the exam?

informative post j89.

Pro28, that means I qualified for the exam and then placed in the top 150 of around 1000. The top 20 are invited to camp.

^was that sarcasm about j89’s post? Because what he said is basically true. 2160’s, 34 ACT, and 3.8s are a dime a dozen at Michigan. My stats were slightly better and I had more ECs, volunteering, and I can say that the only reason I got scholarships was because they came from my parents workplace. I didn’t get anything from UM itself. Good luck, but don’t expect anything from UM, especially since your income bracket = no need based

^ yes, it was. Your post you see, was a lot better.

The 75th percentile at Michigan is a 31 ACT. I can understand how 3.8’s are a dime a dozen though.

I did not list even half of my app, I just want a ballpark estimate.

Anyways, this is not so great news but thanks you two. If there are any other opinions please post.

I think you have a decent chance if your extracurriculars are good. I got one, and I had worse grades than you, the same AP scores, and amazing extracurriculars. However, I found out that I recieved the scholarship after I committed to coming to Michigan. If you don’t get one on the date the university says they’ll post all the financial aid awards, don’t lose hope. All the scholarships that were originally offered to people who turned them down are redistributed to incoming students, which means you could still have a chance!

^ interesting, but I can’t just count on luck when thousands of dollars are on the line.

Lots of OOS students in the top 25 percentile that are accepted to UM choose to go to other colleges because of costs. While your stats are very good, they are not (IMHO) spectacular enough to receive much in merit scholarships from UM. I’m sure your stats are more than good enough to get $$$ at some other good schools or perhaps your own state U.

Other good schools that give merit aid I would be competitive for? Such as? And my own state U isn’t any UMich.

Purdue and UIUC offered me a lot of money for an OOS. It still ended up costing about as much as UM instate did, which I think is a pretty damn good deal for a person in your situation (no good instate engin school).

Thanks, I answered your question. As directly as possible.

However, if you want to know, I don’t think your chances are impossible for a scholarship. In fact your success in USNCO may get you some scholarship money, but probably not directly from the University. You should understand that the University of Michigan College of Engineering is top par and doesn’t give every admitted person (a majority that applies has 3.8 and 2100) a scholarship. That said, I would recommend looking into Purdue which is known to give out Trustees/Presidential Scholarships to good OOS applicants.

^ sorry, because you were the first post and you didn’t explain why you thought that, I didn’t like it. thanks tho

No kidding? Perhaps that is one of the reasons you’re applying to Michigan. That said, besides yours there are 48 other state Us that also aren’t Michigan. An unfortunate fact of life is that not every student is financially able to attend any school that they can get accepted. Fortunately (probably because of hard work) your stats are strong enough to receive merit scholarships at many schools OTHER than UM. Definitely apply to UM and hope you get lucky with financial aid, but also (IMHO) make sure you apply to some financial safety schools.

here’s some info that may interest you

[Michigan Engineering | Student Profile](http://www.engin.umich.edu/about/studentprofile.html)

from there, the median ACT is 31 and the median SAT is 1400 for COE, which seems to be on-par with LSA honors. good luck with your apps.

Your stats are average for engineering, so I wouldn’t expect anything if I were you. Check out Purdue and Illinois though. Purdue should give you an automatic $10k per year, and Illinois gives out huge scholarships for OOS students that aren’t as competitive as Michigan’s.

^He’s definitely better than average, but not scholarship material.

I would estimate that 15% of COE had a 34+.

What?? The median ACT score is 31 but the median HS GPA is 3.9?? The GPA must be weighted, right?

And what percent receive scholarships? Also I could easily retake the ACT, which I’ve only taken once, and possibly get a 35.

“The GPA must be weighted, right?”

No, that’s unweighted.

“And what percent receive scholarships?”

I really have no idea (I’m not scholarship level either). Maybe .5-1%?

Wow, how is mine low (3.8) compared to the median? Do they care about rigor of your courses at least?
