Which schools in Indiana have good engineering scholarships?
In my son’s case, he received both the presidential and an engineering scholarship. I don’t think they’re mutually exclusive and the departmental ones have different levels/award amounts.
@alamom Thank you, I meant to post that question somewhere else so I changed it just a moment ago but while we’re on the topic, does that mean different departments of engineering have different scholarships?
I believe so, as is the case with Auburn. The departmental scholarships can usually be stacked with university-wide money. Alabama is a little more “cloak and dagger” with theirs. It’s often difficult to find clear cutoffs for anything within departments. In his case he received the engineering leadership scholarship, which amounted to 10k over 4 years. I read there were others that paid even more. This was on top of the presidential, covering tuition. I must note, he is an in-state kid. He initially submitted a 30, then a 32. Either way he was eligible for presidential, while an OOS student would need a 32.
@alamom Thank you so much! I had a hard time finding this information and I didn’t know about the different departments having cut-offs so this will be a big help. Thanks again!

???
What the heck does that mean?
Alabama is quite straight-forward with theirs…and is more generous to OOS students. And all eng’g students get add’l scholarships if they have the stated stats.
Ummm, Alabama lists scholarships right on the web site:
http://eng.ua.edu/undergraduate/scholarships/
How is your stat? Purdue has good engineering and many scholarships (not just for engineering though) if you do have great scores and GPA.
@billcsho I don’t have a great unweighted GPA but some of my merit stats are:
3.6 uneweighted, 4.2 weighted
30 ACT
Maybe other scholarships?:
100+ Volunteer hours
2 Leadership positions
@mom2collegekids @ucbalumnus Does this mean that all engineering departments have the same scholarship prerequisites (like mechanical engineering has the same scholarship requirements as maybe civil engineering)?
@RocketsandMoons8 If you are looking for merit scholarships, your stat needs to likely at or above the 75th percentile of admission. In other words, you need to look at some low match to safety schools.
@billcsho Okay, thank you. But how do you find the percentiles for each department at a university?
Are you applying as freshmen? Most schools do not accept students directly into a major. So most departmental scholarships would be for sophomore or higher that have declared major. In that case, the will evaluate you with the college GPA. If you are a freshmen, you are barking at the wrong tree.
I stand corrected… I’ve literally never laid eyes on that engineering chart. I apologize for the misinformation, which apparently is tantamount to murder. Sheesh
@billcsho Yeah, I’m applying as a Freshman. But to go back to the link from earlier, would I still be able to get the engineering scholarship in addition to the main scholarship (UA scholar or Presidential)? Thanks!
@alamom lol, It’s all good
You can definitely stack those. My son has a current offer for both, plus a small alumni scholarship.
@alamom Good to know, Thank You!
Just FYI: son applied as prospective engineer, but put “undecided” for the specific area of engineering.
For those particular scholarships listed at http://eng.ua.edu/undergraduate/scholarships/ (which are offered purely by stats and whether one is in a major in the engineering division), yes. There may or may not be other scholarships as well that are department specific. Of course, other schools may differ.
Note that if you will be applying for fall 2017 entry at Alabama, you want to retry the ACT and try the SAT for 32 and 1400 respectively, since that will upgrade the university scholarship from 2/3 tuition to full tuition (note that the top-up-to-full-tuition scholarship for engineering in the 30-31 ACT range will not be offered starting fall 2017).
Yes, you can stack. Bama lets you stack scholarships.
I suggest that you retest and try for the ACT 32 and/or SAT equivalent. You may do better on the SAT.
